One of the earliest examples of writing found laments that writing allows young people to record things, so they memorize things anymore.

And Homer's Iliad is full of comments like how the heroes of the older generation were manly and strong, not like the effete weaklings of the late bronze age.

In college, I read a letter from a father in London to his son who was at university in Paris. The son had written asking for more money. The father replied, angrily, that he heard that the son wasn't studying and was just sitting around playing guitar all day.

The letter was written in 1375.
