The GOP knew when they wrote that bill that a mentally ill person was going to commit mass murder with a gun. They knew it, but they have their tongues so far up the NRA's asshole that they just can't help themselves.

We knew who the NRA was after Sandy Hook.  But they continue to pull in money from gun manufacturers and from Larry the mechanic who is convinced the sissy liberals are going to make a world where all the black or brown men take everything he owns while he helplessly watches.  Because the black and brown men will be illegally bristling with big masculine, virile guns while Larry has been emasculated.

Feature, not a bug. Gun stocks went through the roof after the shooting. Unfettered access to firearms for the mentally ill is essential to gun manufacturers' bottom line.

But of course, now is not the time to talk about that. I'll go in my shame box until the next mass shooting.

Senator Charles Grassley, who pushed for the repeal, said the regulations are filled with "vague characteristics that do not fit into the federal mentally defective standard" for prohibiting someone from buying or owning a gun.

Senator Grassley (GOP) took $9900 in campaign contributions from the NRA.

That's less than $17 per Vegas shooting casualty. That's an effective bribe...er, donation for the NRA.

You mean the reg that even the ACLU got behind the repeal of?

The reg was if you had a court appointed fiduciary guardian you couldn't buy a gun.

How exactly is needing a fiduciary guardian linked to a tendency towards violent behavior to the point that the person should be a prohibited person?

That bill was a bad bill. I'm pretty much liberal-democrat at this point and all for strong firearm regulations, but barring people with any kind of declared mental health status from owning a firearm was a shiat move and poorly considered.

He would have done better to smack the insurance industry for its failure to adequately provide coverage.

Trump is a halfwitted coont hell bent on undermining every single thing Obama did, but that doesn't mean every single thing Obama did was worth keeping or even well considered in the first place.

We're going to have to clarify this somehow. The shooter was not mentally ill. He had no history of mental illness. He had a risk-taking personality, given his predeliction for gambling, and that probably went along with a huge dose of egotism.

The vast majority of criminal violence is not done by people with mental health issues. It's done either for business reasons, or by blowhards who are either (i) too full of themselves to know their place or (ii) fully cognisant that violence is the only way they will keep their (assumed/entitled) place. Most violence isn't lunacy: it's stragegy.

What one can say about this guy is that he was not kind or supportive. This doesn't mean he was mad. It just means he was a coont.

Every indication is that up until recently, he would have been a member of that crowd himself.  It's hard to say what triggered him, but it is clearly an annihilation scenario of some sort.

If he was a terrorist the Feds handle the case and with the Trump administration whitewashing domestic terrorist groups (or white nationalist militias if you are easily offended) labeling this as domestic terrorism would help to reverse that misguided decision.  I'd prefer that we find out what the actual motive (for this and other similar events) was and any connections to groups such as these before saying it one way or the other.
