From TFA:
Science is much more than a method; it's the accumulated knowledge of the entire human enterprise, gathered and synthesized together for the betterment of everyone.

Damned well said.

The confirmation of the existence of neutrinos was similar, though on a smaller scale.  Wonderful work, and an amazing advancement.

Our children and grandchildren will likely see massive benefits from this work.  I hope to live long enough to see this begin to shift technology and our understanding of the cosmos.

The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of two black holes colliding.

Is it a coincidence, with the arrival of the first documented gravity wave to earth, we are having having all these earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanoes, violence, presidents being elected, and other oddities?

More to the point, Earth has been hit by these sorts of gravitational waves for its entire existence with no ill effects.  The only thing that has changed is that we can now detect them.

Also, gravitational waves are not the same thing as gravity waves.

Whoops. It didn't occur to me they could possibly be different. I simply shortened gravitational to gravity.

~ 3 solar masses of matter released as energy. A few orders of magnitude larger than what's emitted in a supernova, but almost entirely emitted as wiggles in the fabric of spacetime itself. Absolutely mind-blowing.

The reason that it took so long to detect one is because they're so faint and attenuated from their vast journey.

and we didn't have the detectors in place. We've basically built a large version of the michelson morley experiment but with much tighter controls.

And the reason that these new devices work for the present purpose is because the speed of light is a stone cold constant.
