Number one albums mean nothing since people stopped buying album. Also I'd like to point out Weird Al had a number one before them. I love Weird Al, I mean like love Weird Al, if he needed my kidneys he could have them, even if it were only for a one off comedy prop on a show in a scene that ultimately gets left on the cutting room floor, but if him hitting #1 isn't proof album are dead then I'll be a greased up ferret at Richard Gere's house.

/I don't mind the Killer either

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan

The Killers are Cylons?

Huh. I'd have guessed, after 17 tracks, that they'd had it with this game.

I absolutely love The Man, but I freely admit that I probably have garbage taste in music.

A rather macabre juxtaposition with the Las Vegas shooting.

Al also put on a major media blitz to support the album. A niche artist like him isn't going to pull off major sustained sales, so he put all his eggs in one basket for the opening week and did a swell job of it. He had his core audience buzzing as well as the people who waste their time on the eight sites that had videos exclusives that week, plus a Reddit AMA. I can't think of anyone else pulling off a comparable stunt that well since it became possible. He earned that #1.

And yet its still not even going to come close to making the same impact Hot Fuss, which was an important cultural touchstone of the time in which it came out.

The Killers' cultural touchstone peak was when the world first heard their rhyme of 'I've Got Soul But I'm Not A Soldier'.

And still for some, it was Brandon Flowers' 'debate' with Richard Dawkins on the matter of how the Mormon church started on live tv. He's fortunate to be pretty and in a successful band.

/like the band

I saw them in the lineup for one of the late  night shows and thought it said The Kills.

Very disappointing.

I have a rule against denigrating people's musical tastes, so I'm not knocking the band.

Important cultural touchstone? The Killers? This can't be a serious comment.

Apologies if I'm being an ass.

No, it's a good song. I can't help but be amused every time I hear it.

As in - stupid fingers - isn't this the band whose frontman had a fling with Rufus Wainwright but hid it from his pals in the Blue Collar Church of Scientology?

It is a silly/pompus song, but, yes, I sing along every time it comes on (and going to see The Killers in Chicago in January).

I've only been to one minor league baseball game this year and don't recall hearing it (but, it was the last game "All of our theme nights for the year" night, so, they were playing very specific music selections), but, in my mind, that had to be the "Walk Up" music of choice this summer for baseball batters.... even if the video plays the lyrics in a cynical way..... who doesn't want to walk up to bat with "I got gas in the tank
I got money in the bank, I got news for you baby, you're looking at the man" playing in the background.

And #1 is all dependent on your tastes anyway, and what "chart" you care about....

This is the overall #1 2017 Billboard Songs, I couldn't even name half of them if I heard them (actually, I think only 2 of them):  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Billboard_Hot_100_number-one_singles_of_2017

On the other hand, I enjoy every song on here:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_number-one_Billboard_Alternative_Songs_of_2017

"USDA certified lean" is either the best or worst lyric of the year.  I'll sing it every time.

#1 Album in 2017?  That's what, 9,000 copies sold... somewhere?

Actually, it's 110,000.    No, not what #1 Album was 30 years ago, but, 100k in a week in 2017 is actually pretty good, considering 90% of people just listen on Spotify, Pandora, Youtube, etc.  instead of actually owning music.

I remember liking some Killers songs from a while back, but I didn't even recognise "The Man" as being them.  To me, that song is too disco.

And I am not Disco Stu.

I've been jamming The Man for the last couple of months. I really like the song and it makes you feel pretty confident. I just got demoted last week, though, so I might need to find a different song :(
