I am putting no faith in him coming out of this the same.  He was in cardiac arrest for who knows how long before efforts of resuscitation were taken.  Odds are there is brain damage.  He's dead; his body just does not know it yet.

willfullyobscure: I always hated his singing voice. nails on a chalkboard. every SINGLE time a song of his came on the radio I'd fantasize about how good it would sound if Bruce SpringSteen or Jim Morrison, or basically literally anyone that didn't sing contra alto through the squeakiest spot at the top of the bridge of their nose with the force of a thousand wet-dry vacs on full reverse were to sing it

great song writer. wish nobody ever told him he could sing

Not now, puddin. Go take a nappy nap and then later, maybe, the adults in the room will watch you perform.

I'm a mess. Some of my best childhood memories involve listening to his music with my  Dad, who's about Petty's age. Dad just called me, remembering all the great times we shared listening to Petty together. I saw him for the first, and now last time, live in July.
I haven't been able to stop crying since I got off the phone.

From TMZ:

1:35 PM PT -- Sources tell us at 10:30 Monday morning a chaplain was called to Tom's hospital room. We're told the family has a "do not resuscitate" order on Tom. The singer is not expected to live through the day, but he's still clinging to life. A report that the LAPD confirmed the singer's death is inaccurate -- the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. handled the emergency.

Well, are any of these news outlets going to admit they farked up proclaiming him dead like 4 hours early? The link from earlier today has nothing about it. I bet Variety farked up to, but I didn't see it in this link, either.

Because stating that someone is dead before they're dead is definitely cause for at least an "update", even if you were just a few hours early.

Though harlee cannot imagine "I Won't Back Down" done well by anyone else. With Petty's voice it is perfection. Anyone else? Meh.

Some songs are just best when done by their writers. "The Final Countdown" is one. This is another.

I could see Johnny Cash doing it

Yeah I could definitely hear Cash doing "I Won't Back Down" but wow, I just caught the last part of this and thought you were referring to him singing "The Final Countdown."  I love the man in black however I think I would have to draw the line there.

He did. Cash recorded a cover of "I Won't Back Down" that ended up on the Unearthed box set that came out after he died. Petty even sang backup on it, like he did on a lot of Cash's American Records songs.
Their version of "Sea of Heartbreak" is awesome.

imagine Barry White singing Free Fallin' and tell me I'm wrong again

Or listen to Handle With Care and note the jarring difference between the dulcet tones of Roy Orbison's chorus and the next line when Petty and Dylan take over.  Great song writer, fantastic showman with a distinct nasal twang.

Springsteen ? No !

I once described Springsteen's usual singing voice as "he has a cat up his ass fighting to get out." Now all my friends use that phrase, usually shortened to "there's that cat" when we hear one of his songs.
An exception is made for "Tunnel of Love." He left the cat out for once.

He used to wash dishes and sing along to the radio and his boss would tell him how horrible his voice was. Showed that motherfarker what's what.

Also, you think Springsteen can sing better than Petty? Petty's no Mercury but I HATE Springsteen. He sounds like a drunk guy when you wake him up and tell him to get out of your bath tub.

There are so few donors that now they're even putting Hep C donated livers into folks with Hep C who need them. Not all of those livers are damaged, or not damaged much.
