Sadly this.  Brain death is clinical death.  There is no "getting better".

They already put him on the cart.
He's dead Jim.
Just lawyers and vultures swirling around as they try to get the best spot to pick at the body and estate.

We obviously don't know anything, including the state of consciousness. The initial reports were wrong. He's apparently still on life support.

I'm holding out hope until he's reported dead or they pull the plug.

Not according to tfa.

From TMZ:

1:35 PM PT -- Sources tell us at 10:30 Monday morning a chaplain was called to Tom's hospital room. We're told the family has a "do not resuscitate" order on Tom. The singer is not expected to live through the day, but he's still clinging to life. A report that the LAPD confirmed the singer's death is inaccurate -- the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. handled the emergency.

I read it on Billboard.
I'm willing to accept that we don't really know what's going on, especially with the premature reports of his death.

Only hope is that the report of no brain activity was incorrect.  I'm not seeing that refuted anywhere officially but then again it's not exactly "confirmed" officially either, but I'm, yeah don't hold your breath.

I am putting no faith in him coming out of this the same.  He was in cardiac arrest for who knows how long before efforts of resuscitation were taken.  Odds are there is brain damage.  He's dead; his body just does not know it yet.

2017-10-02 07:25:11 PM
I always hated his singing voice. nails on a chalkboard. every SINGLE time a song of his came on the radio I'd fantasize about how good it would sound if Bruce SpringSteen or Jim Morrison, or basically literally anyone that didn't sing contra alto through the squeakiest spot at the top of the bridge of their nose with the force of a thousand wet-dry vacs on full reverse were to sing it

great song writer. wish nobody ever told him he could sing

I once described Springsteen's usual singing voice as "he has a cat up his ass fighting to get out." Now all my friends use that phrase, usually shortened to "there's that cat" when we hear one of his songs.
An exception is made for "Tunnel of Love." He left the cat out for once.

Or listen to Handle With Care and note the jarring difference between the dulcet tones of Roy Orbison's chorus and the next line when Petty and Dylan take over.  Great song writer, fantastic showman with a distinct nasal twang.

Though harlee cannot imagine "I Won't Back Down" done well by anyone else. With Petty's voice it is perfection. Anyone else? Meh.

I saw an interview with Petty about the Traveling Wilburys' recording sessions.  He said that right after he recorded a vocal track, Jeff Lynne said, "Roy, why don't you try singing this?" and Petty was all like "Man, couldn't you wait till I'd gone out for dinner?"

But oh yeah, a legendary rock-n-roller, and I'm gut-punched by the news.  Too soon man, too soon.....

He did. Cash recorded a cover of "I Won't Back Down" that ended up on the Unearthed box set that came out after he died. Petty even sang backup on it, like he did on a lot of Cash's American Records songs.
Their version of "Sea of Heartbreak" is awesome.

Well, are any of these news outlets going to admit they farked up proclaiming him dead like 4 hours early? The link from earlier today has nothing about it. I bet Variety farked up to, but I didn't see it in this link, either.

Because stating that someone is dead before they're dead is definitely cause for at least an "update", even if you were just a few hours early.

Been listening to Classic Streaming Vinyl for the past couple of hours and they've been playing all TP.  Dude had some great songs.  Found some old memories along the way too.  RIP.

Mikey1969: Well, are any of these news outlets going to admit they farked up proclaiming him dead like 4 hours early? The link from earlier today has nothing about it. I bet Variety farked up to, but I didn't see it in this link, either.

Because stating that someone is dead before they're dead is definitely cause for at least an "update", even if you were just a few hours early.

TMZ reported that Petty had been pronounced brain dead and per his Living Will had been taken off life support.  That proved accurate but misleading because they said Petty needed to be put on life support implying that when he was taken off he died.

Since TMZ made no update of their info and the Family made no update (because there WAS NO update on Petty's condition until this evening) and the family were kinda busy saying good bye to their loved one rather than updating and correcting the Press.

goddammit. I'm so glad I got to see him earlier this year. Great concert.

Shiat. RIP Tom.

I can barely listen to Wildflowers anymore--it was playing when I rushed my cat Tabitha to the emergency vet after she threw a clot. :(  She crossed the bridge. I played it again when I had to take Marko in to help him cross the bridge.

What a shiatty day. :(

His family didn't need to do anything, the people fixing the erroneous reporting were the LAPD, as they came out and stated that they didn't know who had reported that he had died at the time, but that they could not confirm that. Basically, someone spoke to the press as a cop, but wasn't officially supposed to speak to the press, they mis-reported what had happened, and they're in trouble if anyone figures out who they are.

The news agencies than ran with it, as it was the LAPD, but they then dragged their feet on correcting it, as the LAPD was already putting out the new story within an hour of the original press notification.

TMZ doesn't get a pass for "technically accurate". He's not "dead" until he's pronounced"dead". THey farked up, it was based on bad info, but they farked up. And every news agency that followed farked up. At least TMZ has a correction as of 1:35 pm yesterday. Wish the rest of the press could have followed that example and admitted that they farked up.
