Watch that video closely. With a gesture, Tom Petty ends Prince's guitar solo. If Tom hadn't, Prince would still be playing that solo TO THIS DAY AND NEITHER OF THEM WOULD BE DEAD.

Delay: DVOM: Delay: DVOM: A cardiac arrest is an unforgiving MFer.  Of the people who make it to the hospital alive, 90% of them die.

Nope. 25% to 40% survive. Also, Petty is relatively young. Sedentary 86 year olds die of cardiac arrest, active 66 year olds live.

I think you should run that by your electro cardiologist.

Hunny, IRL I have even used an AED on my office mate during full cardiac arrest.

That doesn't sound smart. I don't think you should be doing anything during full cardiac arrest. You could lose consciousness at any moment and put that AED in the wrong spot.

I got to see Tom Petty during Full Moon Fever tour.  It was freaking great.

Except my friend was stoned. So part of the set looked like one of those eclectic rooms, with suit of armor. Tom said before playing Running Down a Dream, "This next number is a bit strange". The strange part was that during the final five minute guitar jam, the suit of armor comes alive and chases Tom around the set under strobe lights (intermission)

My friend screamed "We gotta save Tom" and it took three of us to restrain him from jumping on the stage.

Oh my gosh!  that's awful.

I never saw him live, i don't own any of his albums, either with the Heartbreakers / Wilburys / solo, but.....i knew a shiatload of his songs -- we all do -- and this sucks.

"A Face In the Crowd", Running Down a Dream, Don't Do me Like That, Stop Draggin' My Heart Around, Free Fallin'......Mary Jane....and a shiatload more.  a real loss for rock.

RIP Tom.  Thanks for the songs.  Now go jam with George....

/he tweeted to me once;  a few years back someone stole a bunch of his guitars and he pleaded with the thiefs on social media, "i just want my guitars back, no questions asked, don't be a dick, ok?"  I tweeted to him, "what kind of animal steals another man's guitars?"  Tom instantly Tweeted back, "yeah man, I know, right?  thanks, [username]!  keep rocking!"  when i got the notification i squealed like a little girl and ran and showed my wife:  "Tom Petty just talked to me!"

Many years ago, Had a friend who's band opened for Tom (I was a glorified Roadie).  We had rented a water ski school for the weekend.  So that Sunday, from out of a trail comes the entire band with steaks and beer.  apparently they rented the house next to ours...but ours was cooler.  So Tom being drunk and apparently high decides to teach me how to water ski.  I immediately fall face down and tom is dragging me around this lake yelling "Hang on, you can make it back up!!"  I didn't make it back up.  But a fun afternoon with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.  Really nice guy.

I guess heart attacks do that.

Sorry, Petty did not have a heart attack AKA myocardial infarction. That issue is caused by coronary arteries not supplying oxygenated blood to the heart because of obstructions. He had cardiac arrest. That issue is caused simply by the heart muscle not beating properly. There are lots of ways to address cardiac arrest.

Hey Crazy coont, that isn't a morality speech - it's fact. You are either young, or stupid, or both. Coke that you did in your 20's and 30's doesn't kill you in your 50's and 60's - the coke you do in your 50's and 60's kills you.

Yeah, they pulled life support, there's no brain activity and a Chaplin was called.

That's kinda the trilogy of "maybe not now but soon" which happens after all the family have been able to say their goodbyes.

In the very off chance he lives there's not likely a whole lot going to be left of him.  Were talking Terry Schiavo territory.

He was my first big concert in a stadium way back in the early 80's.  Ticket was 20 bucks IIRC and my brother took me.  Not a bad introduction to rock and roll.

It's okay, the Chaplin is backing up

They must've moved him to a better hospital.

Anyway, his run from '89 to '95 was a great one. He avoided the bad pop trappings of the era, even when produced by Jeff Lynne.

I can just hear the banter:

"Now come on, Jeff, no ELO bullshiat. "

Hey, don't get me wrong, I love me some ELO, but Tom Petty doing an ELO sound would make about as much sense as Kiss covering Thick as a Brick.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I love me some ELO, but Tom Petty doing an ELO sound would make about as much sense as Kiss covering Thick as a Brick.

Weird story, in light of recent events:

So I'm an undergrad in college, late 90s, it's right before winter break and hardly anyone's in the dorms. On a whim I follow my friend up to this random guy's (let's call him Bob) dorm to drink and fark around. I get there, they are watching Faces of Death on mute and listening to Tom Petty. In some weird fit of irony I'm watching this dude fall off a high wire and die to the lyrics of "Free Falling" in the background. It's a small room, but there's this really nice leather couch in the corner. I'm like, nice couch. Bob says it's his roommate, who is out of town. I'm thinking, damn, the roommate must be loaded or something.

A month or so later, as I'm out eating Subway with a friend, there's an event at my dorm. Apparently Bob's roommate who owned the leather couch got busted by his RA (resident assistant) for selling drugs. There's a warrant out for this roommate's arrest. Kid comes back to the dorm with a shotgun, murders the RA then blows his brains out. SWAT team is called in, all this crap. On the same leather couch. I hear later that apparently Bob had to clean the brain matter off the leather couch.

Never listened to Tom Petty quite the same way again.

I had totally forgotten, Tom Petty's Greatest Hits was the album I had on repeat when I spent two hours in a chair having my wisdom teeth pulled.

Who can forget his part as the mayor of Bridge City in that funniest-ever parody of post-apocalypse movies, "The Postman." What? You mean it wasn't supposed to be a parody??? I call bs.

The lives of thousands of climate-change deniers destroyed by warm ocean mega-storms.
Hundreds of country-western fans killed or injured by a wild gunman.
The lead singer of the Heart Breakers literally dying of a broken heart.

2017 has some kind of poetic ending theme going on.

If I were Trump I would be afraid rogue golf balls or falling television sets.

He has some great songs. Saw him in concert once. Most boring concert I think I've ever been to.

This makes Jeff Lynne the last remaining Traveling Wilbury... so sad.

Bob Dylan is still alive... :)

There is an exhaustive (and exhausting - 4 hours) doc on Netflix about him which I watched not too long ago. I realized that even though I don't think I ever purchased a Tom Petty album, I loved his music

NASAM: thismomentinblackhistory: God damn it. I had him on my list of people I must absolutely go see -- no excuses -- since 2016. God I am a lazy piece of shiat.

Me too.  I'm kicking myself for not going to see him the two times I had the chance.

After Prince and Chris Cornell, I promised myself I'd never pass up an opportunity to see an artist I like again. Even if they disappoint me.  I'm looking at you U2.

I had that thought a few years ago. "I gotta catch Leonard Cohen next time he comes through Chicago." New album comes out. Dead.

blatz514: I saw him in 1996.  Lightening hit the stage and blew all the power.  He came out after a bit and starting doing acoustic.  It was brilliant.

RIP Tom.

Never got to see him. You got lucky.
