ununcle: Tom_Slick: So great even Randy Newman gave him props as a songwriter.

/Randy Newman hates most songwriters

How many song writers  like him? Short people? God lord that man sucks. I wanna cock punch him before he even gets a chance to sit at the farkin piano. And no I'm not short. He's just sucks.  Bad. Family Guy had that sketch right. Same lame melody every farkin song accompanied by lame lyrics. Oh yeah,,, RIP Tom, Sorry Randy Newman liked you,, I wish it was him instead of you.

/Sorry Randy, I had a bad day
/But you suck. Stop making songs.

Over your head.

Uah.  MSNBC also confirming he has died.

And 66 years old!  I had no idea he was that old.

A Self-Made Man, he wanted to be Let Up as He'd Had Enough.

RIP

CBC confirming now. Wasn't sure if they were just lagging or not jumping the gun like other clowno outfits... but ya.

Looks like it's official.  Damn.

I'm not even a rock and roll guy but I loved Damn the Torpedoes.  My brother played it a lot back in high school.  "Even the Losers" pretty much sums up my life.  He was an amazing song writer.

They put a stake in his heart. :-(

I didn't realize this Petty shiat meant so much to me. :-(

I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at US festival '83. Their set was amazing and it ranks in the top 5 sets I've seen out of many hundreds. He was a masterful songwriter and a great showman. I've listened to and loved his music for nearly 40 years, and I will miss the contributions of beauty, art and poetry that he made to this world.

Rest in peace, Tom. Thanks for providing the soundtrack to so many good times in my life.

Godfarkingdamnit.

Pretty much get back from lost metalhead weekend to find first some cocksmith shooting up half the damn LA strip, and now Petty's dead (sadly, figured that they had him on life support until he got officially declared; pretty much this is almost exactly how the smother went, except that Tom Petty was by all accounts a far more likable being than the smother).

And pretty much I'll always remember Tom Petty stuff for my two (now deceased) uncles toking to a great extent and singing covers at the family barbecues...

/and me with all the THC in the bloodstream from the Mastodon concert gone
//goddamnit, seriously, why do the good people have to die and all the farknuts survive?
///if idiots start a goddamn nuclear war this weekend I swear to Arceus I will punch those responsible so farking hard they are going to end up in their own separate timeline

Well, I guess I'd better go see Beck before he gets hit by a truck or something.

Three Wilburys gone.

Ironic thing about the pic: From R-L, they died in that order.

Jeff Lynne better watch his ass.

Love his music, and glad we got to see him in concert twice in the past 8 years or so. We were watching one of his concerts one evening on tv with our African Grey parrot and while we were singing along to Learning to Fly Pirate took off flying from his perch and landed a few feet away. He hasn't flown in years, so we were all surprised. Figured the song was his inspiration.....

InmanRoshi: Some were better than others, but the thing about Petty is he had a 40+ year career without making a truly awful clunker album ... and most of the All Timers have made several *cough* *cough* Dylan, Neil *cough*, *cough*.

/Favorite album is Echo.
//Probably won't be able to listen to it today without falling into a heap of tears

Echo is one of my favs. Was kind of a depressing album before, now it's sure to be.

Echo is one of my favs. Was kind of a depressing album before, now it's sure to be.

Saw a recent interview where he said he purposely ignored  the album for a really long time because it was such a painful time in his life to go back to (divorce, kids taken away, heroin addiction, Howie's death), but once he finally was able to revisit it he realized it was some of his best work.

Billy Bathsalt: Strange, I was just working on my car and started humming a tune.  Then I thought "what is that song, anyway?"
It was the Johnny Cash version of "I won't back down."

TP and the Heartbreakers were Cash's studio musicians for many of his American Recordings.

Putting aside his own astronomical success, you've had a pretty nice music career when you got to be in a band with a Beatle and acted Johnny Cash's backing band.

Fairwell Tom.

This makes Jeff Lynne the last remaining Traveling Wilbury... so sad.

Shhh! Don't give 2017 any ideas.

UsikFark: Carousel Beast: The submission should simply have been "Heartbreaker" or "Heartbroken"

I thought his band were the heartbreakers. You don't think Country Joe was a fish, do ya?

I was given a pleco named Country Joe.

I don't know.  With all the recent ELO songs I've heard in ads, he might have some medical bills to pay.

WoodyHayes: houstondragon: Tom Petty in "The Postman"[_ image _x_][_ image _x_]

There is a very real possibility that I am the only individual alive who liked The Postman. I've never read the book, though it isn't all that good from what I've heard about it.

I hope Stevie Nicks is doing well.

No. I liked it too. And yes the movie is far better than the book (though I loathe comparing a movie to a book of the same story)
