waxingpolemic: doczoidberg: This sucks. Tom Petty is one of the few old school rocker guys who everyone worships that I actually like.

There was not a single thing he ever did, musically, that sucked.

Not.  One.

Yeah, the soundtrack to She's The One sucked pretty bad. But that's just one.

carrion_luggage: derpes_simplex: Hloy crap, Variety and TMZ are reporting he's still alive.  Probably farked, but 'clinging to life'!

He ain't dead! He ain't dead Sarge! His vitals are real low but he ain't dead!

Sadly, the question becomes how long was his brain deprived of oxygen.  He can afford all the heart stuff, but if his brain lacked sufficient O2 for say, more than 4 minutes, prognosis is bleak.

Nope. 25% to 40% survive. Also, Petty is relatively young. Sedentary 86 year olds die of cardiac arrest, active 66 year olds live.

I think you should run that by your electro cardiologist.

Hunny, IRL I have even used an AED on my office mate during full cardiac arrest.

Aw that really sucks. My very first concert in late 80s. You rocked, Mr. Petty. We will miss you.

Offtopic, but it kind of pissed me off that McCartney did "Sgt Pepper," complete with the ripping guitar work, at one of the Superbowls (with Bono) but THEY DIDN'T DO "With a Little Help From My Friends." That was it.

Maybe because Ringo would have overshadowed both of them.

RIP Tom, thanks for so many wonderful nights...  I've never seen anyone as many times in my life.  Choking back the tears, so many good memories attributed to him.

lawboy87: The first concert I ever attended (1978) Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were the opening act for the Kinks.

Petty had a situation kind of like Springsteen, he was involved in a 2-3 yr lawsuit with his record company and was sidelined as a performer for a number of years.  The concert I saw was one of his first after they settled the suit and he could resume playing live.

I still have the shirt.  The material is a bit too thin to wear anymore, and I'm a bit too fat for it. But I still have it.

Saw him and the Heartbreakers at Red Rocks twelve years ago. My mom and I don't get along too well, but she got me a ticket and drove my teenage butt there and sat in the car. Think I'll text her and thank her again for letting me see a Wilbury. Wearing that tour t-shirt now.

That doesn't sound smart. I don't think you should be doing anything during full cardiac arrest. You could lose consciousness at any moment and put that AED in the wrong spot.

There was a lot of cocaine around in the 70's/80's.  Bad for the old ticker.

2017-10-02 06:54:44 PM
Though I have read thst reports of his death may have been premature, hope is still thin.

Tom Petty was/still is an amazing artist. His lyrics are heartfelt and authentic.  His music, though beautiful by any sense of the word,  was simple enough to be approachable by a teenager dabling in guitar.

His music brought me through my coming of age, helped me through my first make heartbreak, and honestly still pulls my heartstrings to this day.

There are many talented musicians who I don't give a damn about. Tom Petty  is not one of them.  He is a legend, a true artist, and a great story teller.

Please don't leave, Tom. Please pull through.  No offense,  but I hope the "Heartbreakers" do not live up to their name. We need you still.

Also, fark 2017 already.

The 25-40% is all age levels. I agree that most most folks don't have an AED and a doc right there.

So, let's bet. Tom Petty is at UCLA right now and has emergency cardiovascular teams from both Stanford and USC on call. Full disclosure, I know these folks.

Two of my aunts died in a car accident in June 1995 when Wildflowers was out. I had seen Petty in concert earlier that year. I played the album a lot the week of the funerals to help me cope. It is one of those albums that was there when I needed it.

Sorry for your loss. I am glad you found comfort in his music, too.

Bell's Boy: True Story......

I was 19 years old when my fiance and I got into a car accident..... she didn't make it. Her mother allowed me to choose the opening song for the funeral. I chose "Wildflowers" by Tom Petty.

Today sucks. He meant about as much to me as someone can who I haven't met. RIP.

Geeze, people. It's not like when someone dies, that you have to turn-in all of your albums. Put on your Petty 8-track, reel-to-reel, LP, 45, CD, MP3... smoke a joint and chill the fark out at the memory of a true rocking hero.
