They must've moved him to a better hospital.

Anyway, his run from '89 to '95 was a great one. He avoided the bad pop trappings of the era, even when produced by Jeff Lynne.

I can just hear the banter:

"Now come on, Jeff, no ELO bullshiat. "

Hey, don't get me wrong, I love me some ELO, but Tom Petty doing an ELO sound would make about as much sense as Kiss covering Thick as a Brick.

Traveling Wilburys gets pretty ELO'ey, especially Roy Orbison's track.

Oh, I know. But the ELO sound would've went over like a fart in church on an honest to god Tom Petty album.

It's still there. Check "Won't Back Down." Just not as obnoxious.

multi-tracked backing vocals, man.

Demetrius: SiriusXM still had him DJ'ing his station after he was dead.  I know it's pre-recorded, but you'd think they'd get them message quicker and pull some quick programming changes.

Anyone in there, SiriusXM?

The station has DJs live, who are talking to people calling in. "We're not sure we've lost Tom Petty" he said a moment ago.

Sean VasDeferens: God damn it!

Best concert ever for me was at R.F.K. featuring Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and The Grateful Dead.

I was there too. 1986 I think. Tom started his set with a rockin' 'I fought the law and the law won.'
July hot; near the stage people were hosing down the crowd.
Then Dylan comes out in full leather.
Memories, we got 'em.

Yeah, they pulled life support, there's no brain activity and a Chaplin was called.

That's kinda the trilogy of "maybe not now but soon" which happens after all the family have been able to say their goodbyes.

In the very off chance he lives there's not likely a whole lot going to be left of him.  Were talking Terry Schiavo territory.

He was my first big concert in a stadium way back in the early 80's.  Ticket was 20 bucks IIRC and my brother took me.  Not a bad introduction to rock and roll.

It's okay, the Chaplin is backing up

I was listening to Jonesy's Jukebox in my car a couple of hours ago when he broke the news about Petty having a heart attack and being placed on life support. Cried all the way home. Then I heard that Petty had died, and I cried some more. Now he might still be alive. I certainly hope so.

Someone check the stairwells or something.

Farking Billy Joel was right.  I guess 66 isn't really young, but I always thought/hoped Tom Mellow Man Petty would live to 100.    By all accounts he was an ace human being, especially by Rock-God standards.

CSB:  that guitar is one of the actual guitars Harrison played with the Beatles.  If I'm not mistaken he acquired it circa 1962 or so on a visit to America.  At the time, the Beatles were famous in liverpool only and hadn't even broken per se in the UK.  he came over to visit his older sister and while in America, bought a shiatload of records and a few guitars that he took back to the UK.

he gave that guitar away to a friend after the Beatles had imploded, but in his late 80s renaissance, the friend gave him back the guitar, which he played off and on in his fewer and fewer public appearances.

/why yes, George is my favorite Beatle, what gave it away?

Apparently 2014's Hypnotic Eye was his only #1 album in the USA.

Further proof of the relevance of streaming services and online listening.

Petty will be so sorely missed, but another complete bummer is that The Heartbreakers will probably never again tour together.. and any possible future collaborations wont by the same without TP.  Holy shiat, what a farking band.  Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell won't get their own fark threads when they pass into the great beyond, but they are farking legends in their own right.  Mike Campbell is still the greatest guitar solo I've ever seen live, and I've  seen most of the all time greats.  Howie Epstein was one of those great bass players who also provided those high note backing harmonizing vocal combinations that added the sound of like 3  players by himself.   And when they added Steve Ferrone, they were farking limitless.

He is at UCLA. Frankly I've seen drowning victims pull out of worse anoxia. USC, UCLA, UCSF, and Stanford have full teams ready for this type of care. There is a DNR in place, but that usually means no intubation. Hang in there Mr. Petty.

Thrash Master Flash: Might not be dead yet?

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/cbs-news-backtracks-tom-petty-death-report-clinging-life-1044972

When they say "clinging to life support", I have to imagine Tom Petty sitting there holding onto a life support machine threatening to shoot the next man who tries to take it away from him.

2017-10-02 06:03:40 PM
I saw him in concert twice.  Excellent both times.

2017-10-02 06:03:58 PM
Its Schrodingers Rock Star. He is both alive and dead until CBS can figure it out

2017-10-02 06:04:00 PM
Saw him at the Gorge. Was sitting by this guy who was all "f*ckin' Petty this and f*ckin' Petty that" He'll always be F*ckin' Petty to me.

brandent: I know I am going straight to hell and am a very bad person but I had a worse reaction to this than the Vegas thing.

No, you're not in a hand basket just now. It's actually a normal reaction to grieve for artists, musicians, etc. That's because it is tied to what you were experiencing while that artist's work was influencing your life. While the situation was  tragic, it is likely that no one whose life was lost in Las Vegas is related in your mind to your own experiences.

2017-10-02 06:04:18 PM
If he has no brain activity, and he has been taken off life support, he's dead.  If he continues to live, then he must by definition have brain activity, because you need at least a functioning brainstem to breathe on your own without the machine doing it for you.

All due respect, Tom seemed like a good guy to get to see become old and really cranky.  I kinda looked forward to hearing him opine and chime in after he'd stopped touring and making music.
