bluorangefyre: HE WAS ALIVE, THEN DEAD, THEN ALIVE AGAIN???  WTF?!?!

But, as a fellow native of Northeast Florida who had a native Northeast Floridian father who died, came back, died, and came back a few times before finally kicking it for good, this is normal for us

I always thought of Gainesville as North Central.

And also reeking of pig shiat.

True Story......

I was 19 years old when my fiance and I got into a car accident..... she didn't make it. Her mother allowed me to choose the opening song for the funeral. I chose "Wildflowers" by Tom Petty.

Today sucks. He meant about as much to me as someone can who I haven't met. RIP.

WTFDYW: Ahh. I was wondering about him. He was the youngest of the group wasn't he?

Keltner played on All Things Must Pass and the Concert for Bangladesh back in the early 70's. He was born in '42. Someone else pointed out Jim Horn played sax for them too.

The first concert I ever attended (1978) Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were the opening act for the Kinks.

Petty had a situation kind of like Springsteen, he was involved in a 2-3 yr lawsuit with his record company and was sidelined as a performer for a number of years.  The concert I saw was one of his first after they settled the suit and he could resume playing live.

I hear a lot of people complain about his music as being bland and boring, like the mashed potatoes of music. I don't disagree but sometimes you just want some damn mashed potatoes.  I've always enjoyed the ease of
Listening to Tom Petty.

They must've moved him to a better hospital.

Anyway, his run from '89 to '95 was a great one. He avoided the bad pop trappings of the era, even when produced by Jeff Lynne.

I can just hear the banter:

"Now come on, Jeff, no ELO bullshiat. "

Salted Metal Honey: happydude45: Salted Metal Honey: OK... here's my best concert ever story.  Everyone has one and Tom Petty was mine.

We're at an outdoor amphitheater in Dallas, TX in Nov 1991 to see him.  Anyway, Texas late autumn weather kicks in and the temperature drops from 70s during the day to high 30s and windy in the evening.  Chris Whitley was opening and lasted about thirty minutes before dropping out.  It must have pissed off TP because he comes out and says "If you can be here, I can be here too"!  He proceeds to play almost 3 hours of music... virtually his whole catalog.  I've been to a bunch of concerts since and nothing has touched that one.  RIP Tom and thanks for the memories.

I was there, and so was my future wife, though we hadn't met at the time. I kept wondering how they could play with frozen hands. It was a great show.

That's awesome!  I think I still remember the stage backdrop (a tree with multiple doors) and Tom running like an athlete for the entire show.

Yes, exactly.

George Harrison became a Lynne convert--I think that's high praise. I have a cassette of a radio interview he did promoting Cloud Nine on Westwood One. He didn't like the production quality of the interview and said "Just send Jeff in there."

The problem is Lynne took the template for "Don't Bring Me Down" and applied it to everything afterwards.

"Full Moon Fever" is at least saved by acoustic guitars.

Yeah, they pulled life support, there's no brain activity and a Chaplin was called.

That's kinda the trilogy of "maybe not now but soon" which happens after all the family have been able to say their goodbyes.

In the very off chance he lives there's not likely a whole lot going to be left of him.  Were talking Terry Schiavo territory.

He was my first big concert in a stadium way back in the early 80's.  Ticket was 20 bucks IIRC and my brother took me.  Not a bad introduction to rock and roll.

We can always hope. In Petty's case the major damage would be when his blood flow is restored. There is often a massive immune response to the anoxic tissue both in the brain and heart. What do? Chill his body temperature and set up an extracorporeal gas exchange plus a tpa drip. Petty is in one of the top institutes for this procedure. He might not be at the end of the line.
