Salted Metal Honey: OK... here's my best concert ever story.  Everyone has one and Tom Petty was mine.

We're at an outdoor amphitheater in Dallas, TX in Nov 1991 to see him.  Anyway, Texas late autumn weather kicks in and the temperature drops from 70s during the day to high 30s and windy in the evening.  Chris Whitley was opening and lasted about thirty minutes before dropping out.  It must have pissed off TP because he comes out and says "If you can be here, I can be here too"!  He proceeds to play almost 3 hours of music... virtually his whole catalog.  I've been to a bunch of concerts since and nothing has touched that one.  RIP Tom and thanks for the memories.

I was there, and so was my future wife, though we hadn't met at the time. I kept wondering how they could play with frozen hands. It was a great show.

houstondragon: Tom Petty in "The Postman"[_ image _x_][_ image _x_]

There is a very real possibility that I am the only individual alive who liked The Postman. I've never read the book, though it isn't all that good from what I've heard about it.

I hope Stevie Nicks is doing well.

I'm not sure if I should know who the blonde is.  Seems like maybe an 80s TV actress that I can't place, but, maybe it is a "non-star" (the article that came from decides to only ID Petty and Shandling).

Comic Book Guy: fragMasterFlash: Hello CD listeners...

holy shiat, I haven't thought about that since I was a kid.  I left the cassette running and that scared the bejeesus out of me when his voice came on.

Ummm, it wasn't on the tape unless one of your friends copied it for you.

Don't bring me down.

Don't put Bob Dylan in the ground just yet.

Isn't Buckingham still alive?

Yes, but he wasn't in the Traveling Wilburys

My bad, thanks.

GrahamManning: Lucky enough to win tix to his last concert and get on his instagram. I'm so bummed right now

wow man, that's awesome!!

WoodyHayes: I hope Stevie Nicks is doing well.

my wife treated her brother recently.  (he said she could tell folks she treated him, no HIPAA issues.)  she's doing great, he doesn't get to see her a bunch but they talk frequently.  he told my wife, "when they got crazu huge in the 70s, she'd fly me out to shows, free tickets, the whole thing......it was just the most bizarre thing to see, you know, 50,000 people in a football stadium, and.....my little sister is onstage, singing to them."

/and a TFette that doesn't post a lot, she let me crash at her house once in LA.  when they bought the house, they saw on teh chain of title documents, one "Mick Fleetwood" as the owner.  CSB......

ha, yeah i thought of that too.  i was a little young for that and didn't really watch it, but the sense i have was that Petty wasn't given lines per se.  seems like every time he spoke he was just making it up on the spot.  i could be wrong.

They must've moved him to a better hospital.

Anyway, his run from '89 to '95 was a great one. He avoided the bad pop trappings of the era, even when produced by Jeff Lynne.

Kattgrrl: damn, woke to the beep of my phone, i heart radio had a newsflash about tom,

then got the news about the vegas shooter when i checked that!

never did see him in concert but always enjoyed his music.

missed my chance to see SRV at alpine valley when living in madison, said i'll catch him next time, and clapton still lives, mixed feelings on that one!

did see alice in chains at summerfest in milwaukee, then lane staley offed himself!
damn it all!

That's where I saw Petty.  Man, did it storm good for about 30 minutes.  Of course, the grass seats turned to mud.

HE WAS ALIVE, THEN DEAD, THEN ALIVE AGAIN???  WTF?!?!

But, as a fellow native of Northeast Florida who had a native Northeast Floridian father who died, came back, died, and came back a few times before finally kicking it for good, this is normal for us

Sad, just sad.  Buried my wife about a year and a half ago, the song our young daughters chose for her send off at the funeral was Wildflowers.  Gonna have to pick that one on my Ibanez tonight when I'm alone, shed a few more tears. Bless ya Tom.

At least it was fast, there's no joy in lingering.  3 family members died of cancer this year.  Fark cancer.

I liked Tom's music well enough, but 40+ years is a good run, I'm glad he was able to contribute to us all.

whidbey: TNel: Damn, Petty is my favorite oldies person. A shame I never got to see him live.

I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with Dylan in 1986.

And as Dylan says in his book "He was at the top of his game and I was at the bottom of mine."

Dylan was horrible. Wasn't a Tom Petty fan, but I agree with the summation.

Same here!!!!!  Sacramento, by chance?  I flew down from Montana...I was jacked to see Dylan, finally.  After the evening was over, I was "Dylan, meh.  Tom Petty was damn cool, though."

Hey, don't get me wrong, I love me some ELO, but Tom Petty doing an ELO sound would make about as much sense as Kiss covering Thick as a Brick.

No, it was in Kansas City.

I recall a friend telling me about a similarly horrid Dylan concert with Steve Earle opening up.

Just not a good period for Dylan. Maybe he was better on the "Oh Mercy" tour a few years later. :\
