I remember seeing the premier for the video of Don't Come Around Here No More. Trippy video that got a ton of play on Mtv. I probably heard his earlier stuff on the radio, but that video is my first real intro to Petty.

He was just happy to be here. Happy to be alive.

I loved the Traveling Wilburys. That was a group of musicians that were all legends, and each of them felt really excited that they got to play with Roy Orbison.

RIP Tom Petty. You were one of the coolest guys in rock and roll.

Wow. We just saw him (with Joe Walsh) a couple of months ago. Great show!

Play on in the beyond, Dylan-y dude.

I fall asleep at 8 am this morning not having seen a lick of news since 11 last night, and I wake up to a massacre in Vegas and the passing of one of my all-time favorite musicians.

What the f*ck.

SiriusXM still had him DJ'ing his station after he was dead.  I know it's pre-recorded, but you'd think they'd get them message quicker and pull some quick programming changes.

Anyone in there, SiriusXM?

Same here.  I think between that and Free Fallin' made me buy a Heartbreakers' cassette.  My dad, who had the car radio set permanently on the classic rock station, was very pleased.

Here's hoping Dad's getting a free show, wherever he is.

OK... here's my best concert ever story.  Everyone has one and Tom Petty was mine.

We're at an outdoor amphitheater in Dallas, TX in Nov 1991 to see him.  Anyway, Texas late autumn weather kicks in and the temperature drops from 70s during the day to high 30s and windy in the evening.  Chris Whitley was opening and lasted about thirty minutes before dropping out.  It must have pissed off TP because he comes out and says "If you can be here, I can be here too"!  He proceeds to play almost 3 hours of music... virtually his whole catalog.  I've been to a bunch of concerts since and nothing has touched that one.  RIP Tom and thanks for the memories.

This.  Hauling ass in 1991 from AZ to San Diego in a 1985 CRX with jacked up A/C, singing at the top of my lungs to the "Into the Great Wide Open" album on cassette, windows and moon roof open wide, onto a new adventure in life.  My anthem for decades. I haz such a sad...:(

I got to see Tom Petty during Full Moon Fever tour.  It was freaking great.

Except my friend was stoned. So part of the set looked like one of those eclectic rooms, with suit of armor. Tom said before playing Running Down a Dream, "This next number is a bit strange". The strange part was that during the final five minute guitar jam, the suit of armor comes alive and chases Tom around the set under strobe lights (intermission)

My friend screamed "We gotta save Tom" and it took three of us to restrain him from jumping on the stage.

I was going to post with a link to my favorite TP song, but I couldn't narrow it down to even ten, much less one.

So I could post the one that reminds me of my wife of 30 years. Or the one that reminds me of my only daughter. Or the one that reminds me of my life as a travel enthusiast. Or the one I heard on my first day of sophomore year in high school. Or the one that reminds me of working in a record store.

But instead, I'll just post the one that I would play at his funeral, if I were invited to do so.

"Mary Jane's Last Dance" was still on heavy rotation on MTV in the Summer of 1995, which I still consider to be the best summer of my life (and it'll likely stay that way).

I had my bike, I had a goal of 1000 miles by the end of summer, I got 1127. There was almost nothing left of the bike when I got done. It wasn't just riding my bike, either. I went swimming, spent time with friends, and made new ones.

I was one of those kids who would have to be grounded to the outside just to keep me off games or whatever and I was happy enough to just sit and read. I remember my brothers and I got in trouble for something that summer and our Mom grounded us til the next day. I asked my Mom what she wanted me to do since I was grounded and she just told me to be back before dark.

There were a lot of good songs on MTV at the time, but Mary Jane's Last Dance was the anthem of that Summer for me.

I am forever grateful.

Gleeman: shiate. Guess I know what Sirius station I'll be listening to on the way home.

I really started to like him as a person after listening to that show.  i tune in at least once a day.  Such a great disposition, and quirky sense of humor.   And i got value from the artists he'd play aside from himself.
