Tonight perhaps I'll play the surround-sound BluRay Audio disc of Damn the Torpedoes.  Yes, it sounds really good.

Oldies...?

Damn. My heart!

Oh my gosh!  that's awful.

I never saw him live, i don't own any of his albums, either with the Heartbreakers / Wilburys / solo, but.....i knew a shiatload of his songs -- we all do -- and this sucks.

"A Face In the Crowd", Running Down a Dream, Don't Do me Like That, Stop Draggin' My Heart Around, Free Fallin'......Mary Jane....and a shiatload more.  a real loss for rock.

RIP Tom.  Thanks for the songs.  Now go jam with George....

/he tweeted to me once;  a few years back someone stole a bunch of his guitars and he pleaded with the thiefs on social media, "i just want my guitars back, no questions asked, don't be a dick, ok?"  I tweeted to him, "what kind of animal steals another man's guitars?"  Tom instantly Tweeted back, "yeah man, I know, right?  thanks, [username]!  keep rocking!"  when i got the notification i squealed like a little girl and ran and showed my wife:  "Tom Petty just talked to me!"

Yes, but he wasn't in the Traveling Wilburys

The lives of thousands of climate-change deniers destroyed by warm ocean mega-storms.
Hundreds of country-western fans killed or injured by a wild gunman.
The lead singer of the Heart Breakers literally dying of a broken heart.

2017 has some kind of poetic ending theme going on.

If I were Trump I would be afraid rogue golf balls or falling television sets.

Who can forget his part as the mayor of Bridge City in that funniest-ever parody of post-apocalypse movies, "The Postman." What? You mean it wasn't supposed to be a parody??? I call bs.

Got to see him when he swung through Tulsa with the Heartbreakers 7 years ago. ZZ Top was the opening band. And it was on my birthday.

Thank you for everything Tom.

I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with Dylan in 1986.

And as Dylan says in his book "He was at the top of his game and I was at the bottom of mine."

Dylan was horrible. Wasn't a Tom Petty fan, but I agree with the summation.

I have a bootleg of one of those shows, and they were both really good on that night.

Tom Petty & the HB's was the first concert I went to in Allentown, Pa. and Petty parachuted into the stadium and walked right up onstage and played for hours. He did it his way.... always. RIP friend.

brandent: I know I am going straight to hell and am a very bad person but I had a worse reaction to this than the Vegas thing.

You're not a bad person; there's science to support the idea that there is a limit to the number of things we can give a shiat about at any given time. I have to admit that my first reaction to the Vegas thing wasn't the gutpunch it usually is, but a sad sigh. "Welp." It wasn't an entirely neutral reaction, it just lacked volume.

We mistake it for news fatigue or helplessness, but I think we're just still shuffling the deck. I've still got San Juan on the brain, myself.

Personally I liked "Don't Come Around Here No More." Nice video.

My fave, like it matters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-GgBfokEZg

Petty always seemed to be his own genre, a mix of country (kinda), rock (a lot) and funk, with a kind of "fark it" sensibility, which I think most people really relate to. Didn't seem overly concerned with being a star, just playing good music.

Farewell, Tom.

U2 - Chris Cornell Tribute Black Hole Sun (May 20, 2017)
Youtube ZWpKxyOFAuQ

Oh-Blonde-One: Have we forgotten Chris Cornell already?

I saw U2's first show after his death.  They usually opened the tour with the Pogues' "A Rainy Night In SoHo" as the band's entrance music.  This show, they piped in "Black hole Sun", then the Pogues.  It was a pretty cool moment.

I'm in that blob of humanity towards the middle of the stage.

2017-10-02 04:36:13 PM
I saw him live at ACL fest about 10 years ago. He headlined the last night. Talking to a lot of random people that weekend that were into all kinds of different music, there was one common interest: everyone was going to the Petty show because who in the fark doesn't like Tom Petty, right? It was hot as fark all weekend because Austin, but half way through his set the skies finally just opened up. It rained so hard the band had to take cover. Went on for a while too.

Given the late hour, they'd been playing for a good spell already, that the stage was now a mess, they're old, and that they were the last performers of the whole damn weekend, an expectation that they would call it a night wasn't unreasonable. But everyone in the crowd stayed through the rain because we all knew they would finish what they started. And of course Tom Petty did.

RIP and thanks for all the great music that will live on forever.

catzies: Vacation Bible School: NASAM: thismomentinblackhistory: God damn it. I had him on my list of people I must absolutely go see -- no excuses -- since 2016. God I am a lazy piece of shiat.

Me too.  I'm kicking myself for not going to see him the two times I had the chance.

After Prince and Chris Cornell, I promised myself I'd never pass up an opportunity to see an artist I like again. Even if they disappoint me.  I'm looking at you U2.

I had that thought a few years ago. "I gotta catch Leonard Cohen next time he comes through Chicago." New album comes out. Dead.

That was me with the Beastie Boys & MCA.

If it makes you feel any better, Cohen was in no shape to travel before he started working on his last album. The doctors told him that he wouldn't be able to handle another tour.

His last album was his farewell to his fans.

Last year this song came into my mind for some reason. I went to You Tube and played this video over and over again.  I first heard of TP during a particularly sad time in my life when my mother was in the hospital - in Vegas no less, since it's in the news today, too - and while I was in state care, one of other girls at the facility had the "Damn the Torpedoes" album which she played constantly.  "Here Comes My Girl" was my favorite.

Tom Petty's greatest moment for me was his Super Bowl halftime performance the game the Giants beat the previously undefeated Patriots. I'll let known Patriots booster Bill Simmons explain it:

Who were these guys? Where was the team I watched for the past few months? Why aren't we attacking these guys? Why did we stick with our January cold-weather offense when we're playing indoors?

And right as I was wondering about all this stuff, Tom Petty started playing "Free Fallin'."

Now ...

Right after the 2002 Pats roared into the locker room with a 14-3 lead and had the Superdome buzzing, U2 roared out and sang "Beautiful Day." It was a seminal moment for every Patriots fan in the building. If you could have picked anything to happen at that specific moment to capture what everyone was feeling, you would have brought U2 out to sing "Beautiful Day." I remember thinking to myself, "Every time I hear this song for the rest of my life, I'm going to think about this game."

Six years later, I was standing there watching Petty sing "Free Fallin'" and thinking, "Good God, is this the Bizarro Beautiful Day?"

Petty concluded the halftime set with "Running Down A Dream," which as a Giants fan I choose to always remember that game, season and Mr. Petty by. May he rest in peace.
