I know I've told this story before but what the hell.

When my kids were little I was lucky enough to be working from home. When they started going to school, I would say "bye boys, have fun storming the castle!" One would say "think it'll work?" And another would say "it would take a miracle."

It was a good way to start the day.

/bonus: my wife hates the movie and couldn't stand us doing that every day.

durbnpoisn: What I found most surprising about that movie was that the book IS actually what Peter Falk is reading.  That is, the film is both an adaptation of the book that really does exist, and a means of how the story was told at the same time.

Which is genius...  For the longest time, I thought the movie was standing on its own and the book was entirely fictional within the film.

I found the book on my patents bookshelf when I was in jr. high. The cover said it was an adult fairy tale. So I snuck it to my room and read it expecting something dirty. Boy was I disappointed.

A movie theater?! What is it?
2017-10-02 10:22:17 AM

I used to love going to the movies.  Back in the days when the entire event cost like $10 tops.  And back when the only other option of seeing a film was watching it on VHS, with scan and pan, on a small CRT TV.

Those were the days when most theaters only had 2-4 screens.  That's all that was needed really.

Nowadays it's minimum 24 screens, and the expense is upwards around $30 per person.  And that's if you can get the cheap seats.  When those sell out, you have to buy the $50 IMAX-3D tickets.  And you get to sit in the front row where you can't even see the screen!

Which is why I only go to the theater now when it's a film that absolutely requires it.  Like, you know, big science fiction movies.

I find it an absolute amazement how many people will pay to see a movie like Manchester by the Sea in the theater.  That's like a special kind of insanity.

suebhoney: dittybopper: suebhoney: Movies were meant to be shared with others.

No they weren't.  It's just that the technology required to show them for the first, oh, 50 years of so of their existence meant that it was too expensive for almost everyone to watch a movie along.

Quite frankly, I enjoy a film much more in an empty or near empty theater.  There are fewer distractions.  And I'm not even talking about the assholes who have to discuss the film while it's being played, or the people asking you questions about the film during the film when this is the first time both of you have seen it*.  Even just people answering the call of nature, or running to get more popcorn, can be distracting.

A film has to be something rather special before I'll lay out the money to go see it on the big screen these days.  Most of the time, I'd rather wait and watch it at home.

*The distaffbopper is famous for that, but I think she's finally caught on based upon my dirty looks and the whispered "how the Hell should I know, I haven't seen it before" comments.

Considering the source of this comment, I'm not surprised. I'd not want to be in a theater with a cynical asshole like you anyway. Thank you for staying away. It will make everyone else's experience much better.

Girls, girls -- you're both ugly.

Films started with the nickelodeon, which were single-customer silent films.

Film eventually took over the opera/play/vaudeville houses, and thus became mass entertainment. Which is about the time it gained things like newsreels and became quasi-public. It always occupied something of an odd niche, though -- never totally a group activity because the presenter was completely unaware of the audience, so any "participation" was meaningless. How a movie plays to its crowd depends somewhat on the nature of the film. Horror and comedy probably work better in a group setting, because it feeds on the crowd reaction. (Although this varies -- jump scare movies work better with crowds, I'd argue slow-burns and audio-centric films work better when you're alone) This is less true for dramas or romances, which almost benefit from a less obvious crowd.

Basically, some films almost need the crowd. Others are better without it.

If you've never gone to one of the Turner Classic Movies re-releases, I suggest them highly. In my area, every film sells out and it's a lot of fun to see classics (99% of them before I was born) in a fully crowded theater.

Movies were meant to be shared with others. I love my 350+ dvd collection, but it does get tiresome quite often, watching them alone :D
