I would imagine you liked Seinfeld and The Larry Sanders Show as well.

It's a specific style of deadpan humor.

Yes, really.  CYE is basically half an hour of an asshole being an asshole to a bunch of other assholes.  It has its moments, but it's not even remotely the funniest show on TV.

Ironically, this sounds like something Larry David would say on an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

"Cringe humor" may be one of the most polarizing forms of comedy to become mainstream. Either you love it, or you hate it. If you love "cringe," Curb is brilliant. If you hate "cringe," Curb sucks. There's no middle ground.

The weird thing is that when I think of this style of humor, I'm thinking about Curb, Larry Sanders, Veep, and Seinfeld, none of which I particularly cared for.

However, looking up cringe humor their list included shows that I very much enjoy(ed).

Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Fawlty Towers, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Parks and Recreation as examples.

I like "Curb" in small doses. Same goes for "Larry Sanders" and "Seinfeld".

"Veep", on the other hand, just sucks.  Everyone is just obnoxious, and not in an original or funny way. It's just stupid.

For my money, the best sitcom of all time is probably "30 Rock" (but "Kimmy Schmidt" sucks ass). And the best sitcom currently on TV...hell, I don't think there is one.

I could argue the reason you prefer Always Sunny over Curb is that the characters on Always Sunnyare so amoral that, when they say or do things that are cringe-worthy, you feel more comfortable laughing at their expense. On Curb,Larry David is presented as a far more empathetic character, so when he crosses lines that we as viewers may or may not cross, the "cringe" can feel far too personal.

I think I like Always Sunny because it's so completely absurd that you don't have to take the characters seriously at all. It's crossed over into surrealism.

The main characters on Parks and Rec and Kimmy Schmidt are pretty much universally loveable even if flawed.

It may just be that I only like this style of humor if it's either too surreal to be taken seriously (Sunny, Fawlty) or if the characters are more likeable.

That's what it is on the surface. But if you think about it a bit more, there's a lot going on under the surface, such as lots of meta jokes.

I'm sorry you don't get that.

Ah yes, the ever popular "you're just not smart enough to get it" defense that always gets trotted out for "sociopaths are funny!" crap like Seinfeld, CYE, Rick & Morty, etc.

Even if you only have SD, as long as you're an HBO subscriber of any type you can get HBO Go in HD. Did that for two years to save money.

Huh just 33 comments from the targeted smart geezer demographic on Fark.  It really is still a cult show I guess.

It's not because the characters are sociopaths, it's because those shows have better writers and their target audience isn't the lowest common denominator.

FYI: No Tomorrow and The Good Place are better than Curb Your Enthusiasm... and the greatest sitcoms ever are Cheers, The Drew Carey Show and Corner Gas.

I will not watch a sitcom with a laugh track. Yes I do feel superior to people that do and having a live audience is not a laugh track.

I'm re-watching all the earlier seasons, and it made me recall the last time i binged watched them all like 7 years ago.   Its not a show that is great for your personality.  Obviously, the cynicism is the humor, but it should be taken in short doses at a time.

I absolutely loved the first season.

It feels familiar because Mike Schur created both The Good Place, Brooklyn 99, and Parks and Recreation.

If you haven't given Brooklyn 99 a try yet, then you should check it out.

I tried. Kristen Bell does not pull off "heartless biatch" very well, she is just so sweet that it is absolutely unconvincing. I bailed after episode 4 or 5.
