We apes finally found a way to detect them.While this article is both old (we had a thread on it a couple of days ago) and not the first detection of gravitational waves, I think it's always worth noting what "detect them" really meansLIGO measures the change in length of two "arms", set 90 degrees from each other.Each arm is 4 kilometers longDuring a gravitational wave detection, they change lengthBy 1/10000th the diameter of a *proton*. Across 4kmAnd we can detect that change, reliably. It's one of the most astonishing feats humans have ever managed/Should have gotten the Nobel last year. If they don't get it this year it will be a huge WTF moment.
Flt209er: Glockenspiel Hero: /Should have gotten the Nobel last year.The detection announcement last year was after the nomination deadline; although only by a week or two. This year, I'd imagine they'll win. My guess is Kip Thorne for half, maybe Barish and Weiss for the other two quarters. We'll find out soon.

doglover: Even scratching your balls creates gravitation waves. It's just harder to detect than blackholes.
