While this article is both old (we had a thread on it a couple of days ago) and not the first detection of gravitational waves, I think it's always worth noting what "detect them" really means

LIGO measures the change in length of two "arms", set 90 degrees from each other.

Each arm is 4 kilometers long

During a gravitational wave detection, they change length

By 1/10000th the diameter of a *proton*.  Across 4km

And we can detect that change, reliably.  It's one of the most astonishing feats humans have ever managed

/Should have gotten the Nobel last year.  If they don't get it this year it will be a huge WTF moment.

October 3. Kip Thorne is a near lock. I hosted his colloquium at wayne state a couple of weeks ago. That'll likely be the last talk he gave as a non-laureate... Besides being so unbelievably smart, Kip is also a very very nice guy. Here's the video I made of the talk (LGT YouTube)
