In 30, 40, or 50 years time, no one is going to give two farks about the vast majority of the music released in this generation, my generation or the one before that either. Change is inevitable, these nostalgiaphiles need to realize that.

I was born in 1971, but I didn't start listening to Led Zeppelin until the 90's.  But my mother did expose me to the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack at a young age, before I discovered that there was more to radio than news, talk, and sports.

I'll have to ask on Count Basie, but they can do Irving Berlin tunes just fine.

Mrs t and I just had a 20y/o intern explain that her new rescue dog was named Ringo by its previous owner after a drummer. She said she googled it and found out the band was the Beatles, who were really popular!

We don't expect young'uns to know our music, but we found it endearing she assumed we also had no idea who they were, because it was so very long ago.

Either you're trying to be funny or you're musically illiterate. Can't figure out which. No matter which one you pick, it's a fail.

My parents raised me on the music they listened to when they were younger, so I have a greater appreciation for so-called "oldies" music or classic rock than most people my age (I'm 35). I also would rather listen to Frank Sinatra, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, or Miles Davis than anything on Top 40 radio nowadays, barring Adele and maybe a couple of other singers. It's not because I don't think there's good music today, I'm sure there is. I just don't have the desire to go combing through all the shiat to find it. I'd rather put on Kind of Blue or Pure Desmond and know it's going to be epic rather than put something on and hope it doesn't suck.

A friend teaches sociology at a local cc. Every year she makes her new students read a study that argues too much media consumption is damaging kids cognitive faculties and rendering them unable to focus. Usually the students agree, citing their own experiences with younger siblings, nieces and nephews, etc.

After everyone's on board she reveals the study is from the 1970s.

I like Led Zeppelin enough that I could probably write the tracklist of the first four albums correctly from memory. But I've personally never given two craps about the Stones... certainly recognized the album, but couldn't name which tracks were or weren't on it. I was only half right when I checked.

Saturday Night Fever is a gimme if you just think about it for a few minutes. Most Millennials, and even a good number of iGen kids, have heard at least half of its soundtrack in other settings.

Ugh, jazz/big band....one of my least favorite genres....and I play trombone....
Eh, at least it wasn't autotune with a Casio keyboard.

Sort of related -- Google/YouTube really needs good normalization and compression settings on their audio.  Watching random YouTube links in Fark comments can be so annoying because every other video I either can't hear or it increases my tinnitus.

Also, why the hell can't I just use my mouse wheel on the volume level icon on the Windows 10 taskbar?  F-U hashtag, click me first and click me again when you're done....it's really frustrating to a 15 year Linux user that's never had to do two extra, totally unnecessary, steps to quickly adjust my volume....15 years of only having to "move pointer over volume icon and scroll" makes 10 so damn annoying.

Fantastic band, meaning the ones playing instruments, and Plant is a singer of exceptional range. The issue I have with them is that Plant was singing throughout, whether there were lyrics or not. Far too much random noisemaking, shrill ooohs, aaaahs, eeeehs, and other random nonsense vocals incessantly distract from the actual music being played.

Shh, being reasonable will just get in the way of the Linux fanboi outrage. I mean it's not like Linux involves a whole lot of doing extra things that Windows doesn't require in order to get things working the way you want, nosirree.

Hell if you wanted to you could just write a script changing the function of the button - like I have one that makes Scroll Lock turn my keyboard lighting on or off.

I've always been somewhat mystified by the iconic reputation of The Rolling Stones.

They released 4 really good albums between 68 and 71 and whole lot of crap before and after. To be fair, Exile is an incredible album.

But, pound for pound, maybe the most overrated band of all time.

/Hot take
