I still maintain that Scenes From An Italian Restaurant started as a radio jingle for some mom and pop Italian cafe in Long Island that just sort of got away from him.

He got plastered one day and drove his car right through the front of the house and into the kitchen.  Put the place out of business.  Barely made enough from the song to pay the hospital bills of the dishwashers he pinned against the walk-in.

I like Billy Joel a lot when I was a teenager. Now, it's either "Summer, Highland Falls" or GTFO.

It's Fark.

Where every single band in the world sucks except for their favorite local indie NIN-Radiohead-Rush cover band that you've never heard of.  The threads are entertaining at least.  Sometimes.

When you look at this album in the context of what else was playing on Top 40 AM radio at the time, it doesn't seem too bad, does it?

I remember hearing Just the Way You Are on the radio for the first time and thinking it was a new Elton John song.  And not a great one.  It's not surprising Billy Joel's career took off during the years Elton was recovering from his 2 albums a year/constant partying 70's heyday.  Not saying Joel sucks, but he was never Elton John. Just a stop gap solution until Elton came back

He gets a pass from me because of "Second Wind (Only Human)" (or maybe vice-versa, I've forgotten the formal title of the song.)  Extending a bit of hope and comfort to the distraught and donating the proceeds of the song to suicide prevention programs?  That shows some soul, and he gets a hat tip from me for that.

I prefer the new wave influenced "Glass Houses" and "Nylon Curtains," along with his earlier groups (the proto-metal Atilla and the fun psych-pop\rock of The Hassles) but "The tranger" does have its' moments, like the weird prog-pop of 'Italian Restaurant.'

Here's Cold Spring Harbor with correct pitch. Even with the sound quality taking a hit, it's  so much better than the chipmunk-on-helium version that was released.

When I was a kid, there was a radio station in my town that my mom listened to, and at the end of the afternoon program before the news, the jock on duty would talk for a few minutes over a loop of the piano-and-whistling intro of "The Stranger".  Then it would play a little bit longer and they'd play a bird call over it, usually a loon.

Not sure where I was going with this.

"He was terrible, he is terrible, he always will be terrible. Anodyne, sappy, superficial, derivative, fraudulently rebellious. Joel's famous song "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me"? Please. It never was rock 'n' roll. Billy Joel's music elevates self-aggrandizing self-pity and contempt for others into its own new and awful genre: "Mock-Rock."

Took me a few minutes to find the quote from Ron Rosenbaum, but always felt that it pretty much summed up the the lack of talent and insight in the crappy songs of Billy Joel pretty nicely.

I'll give him props for being capable of crafting a nice tune now and then -- I'll argue that And So It Goes for example is a great tune, I've heard arrangements for voices that were breathtaking -- but, yeah, a lot of his stuff was kinda marketing-oriented. That criticism's on point often enough.
