Billy Liar: Slow To Return: Damn, lotta Billy Joel hate on Fark.  Did he vote Trump or something?

I don't "hate" hate him.  I just think of him as Elevated Mediocrity.

Perfect.

I've listened to and enjoyed a lot of his work, but had he never existed, my life would be no less artistically enriched.

The phrase I always clung to was drew no water nor made no wake.

FTA: "Billy Joel originally didn't want "Just the Way You Are" on The Stranger. He felt it was a "gloppy ballad" destined to be played at weddings."

I don't know how to tell him this...as a gigging musician for 20 years the only time this ever gets requested is at weddings.  And the only reason we ever play it is because we have a piano player who knows it.  And the only reason he knows it is because it's a gloppy ballad that gets requested at weddings and playing it generally translates into better tips.

It's Fark.

Where every single band in the world sucks except for their favorite local indie NIN-Radiohead-Rush cover band that you've never heard of.  The threads are entertaining at least.  Sometimes.

I don't recall any bad things said about Dolly Parton.

Pffft.  Dolly can't hold a candle to Taylor Swift.

Dolly knows it would cause too much confusion, which one is Taylor and which one is the candle

Wait a sec.  If I go to a wedding I'm supposed to tip the band too, not just the bartender I select as mine for the night?  Does a tip work for you to not play Hot Hot Hot or Chicken Dance or Celebration or YMCA or Electric slide or...........

There's a link in tfa to an interview with him- apparently he agrees with you. He said if he could he'd throw out half of his songs. He seems pretty self-aware.

/and he doesn't come out and say it, but it sounds a lot like he certainly did not vote for Trump

At my wedding we had 1 rule for the dj, no chicken dance or hokey pokey. He must have gotten a dozen requests for chicken dance as it seems to be required atweddings in Wisconsin, but he listened to us.

Everyone knows him, but he had the oddest types of songs become hits.  No one wrote popular music quite like him.  Still puts on a hell of a show.
As for the Elton John comparisons, I would agree that Elton has the better songs but its not like Elton was writing the lyrics.

I saw him on his tour of The Stranger in 1978 & it was a great concert. And I've loved every one of his concerts since.
'Just The Way You Are' is the only song on The Stranger I never liked. Billy should have trusted his instincts & not listened to Linda Ronstadt but what are you going to do. It was Linda Ronstadt.

Eh, he is talented, but I hate him. I have all his 70's records because I usually find that when I hate a popular artist I can be wrong more often than not, or come around to his stuff later, but never Billy Joel. Paul Simon solo is the same for me, it makes me think of punching. Lots of punching.

jj325: I remember hearing Just the Way You Are on the radio for the first time and thinking it was a new Elton John song.  And not a great one.  It's not surprising Billy Joel's career took off during the years Elton was recovering from his 2 albums a year/constant partying 70's heyday.  Not saying Joel sucks, but he was never Elton John. Just a stop gap solution until Elton came back

The 'Dualing Piano Men' concerts Elton & Billy do together are lots of fun.

Until the Night (52nd street) is one of my favorite songs.  I like a lot of the stuff on Turnstiles (I'm a bit of a sucker for piano driven songs, same reason I like Bruce Hornsby),  Goodnight Saigon , Leningrad on Storm Front, and Everybody has a Dream on The Stranger.

There was a reason that people with good musical taste stopped listening to the radio in the mid to late 70's.

There was still great music, you just couldn't find it on a top 40 station

Alright...so here's the breakdown.

Going into the gig the Set Lists are approved by the bride.  If she specifically requests a song no chance in Hell were NOT playing it.  At the end of the night we judge our performance by how much the bride liked us and then if we got the crowd up dancing.

If you're a guest and tip the band they may try and slide something in for you.  Its gotta be something they already know.  If you don't tip the band and it gets played then odds are it was on the set list to begin with.

Same deal with the Bridesmaids and Groomsmen too, except we pretend a little harder to look like were listening.

If you're the Groom or member of the direct family we'll do what we can to put something together on the fly.  If you're the Bride or Father of the Bride we'll come just short of learning it between sets.  Mother of the Bride or Groom, we'll likely adjourn to our vehicles between sets to learn it.

Happy Moms and Happy Brides mean big tips.

At a recent gig I was handed $200 to play Elvis' "Can't Help Falling In Love" and pulled it off.  It was a song I did as a solo acoustic act (I play bass) and we made the decision to go for it.  It wasn't perfect and I played guitar on it while the guitar player held my bass, but it got done and the requester was grateful.  At the end of the night the bandleader handed it all to me and told me that no one should take a cut for just carrying water while someone does the heavy lifting.

Because he's really good at tipping a hat to the styles of other artists. That's him doing the Righteous Brothers. "Laura", "Scandinavian Skies" and "Surprises" are John Lennon/late Beatles, the whole Innocent Man album is basically the old WCBS-FM doo-wop rotation, and so forth.

For me, it's because it is long and gets old fast, the chorus lazily uses the same chords as the verses, and I hate that wheezing harmonica so much.

I f*cking hate Billy Joel. Always have. Pure schmaltz. His music is so goddamned corny an hackneyed he makes Neil Diamond sound overly dense and profoundly sublime in comparison.

I've also heard he is a major a-hole celeb type. Multiple anecdotes from peers and fans seem to confirm this.

Screw him.

"Piano Man" is a stupid sh*tty song. Joel is so trite and pretentious. He is trying way too hard to be that singer-songwriter "heartfelt" guy and fails. That song wallows in its own phony fabricated self-importance.

Tom_Slick: After hearing "She's always a woman to me" the first time I was convinced I really didn't want to meet that particular woman.

That's funny.  I was still in high school and I was firmly convinced I already had...  And So it Goes makes me want to take a hot bath with a cold razor, though, beautiful as it is.  In a funerary sort of way.

Imaginativescreenname: I prefer the new wave influenced "Glass Houses" and "Nylon Curtains," along with his earlier groups (the proto-metal Atilla and the fun psych-pop\rock of The Hassles) but "The tranger" does have its' moments, like the weird prog-pop of 'Italian Restaurant.'

Here's Cold Spring Harbor with correct pitch. Even with the sound quality taking a hit, it's  so much better than the chipmunk-on-helium version that was released.

[Youtube-video https://www.youtube.com/embed/TC-ssZMq96k]

Some friends of mine who were much bigger music aficcionados in our youth always told me he was a boxer (confirmed) and got his sinuses pounded hard enough at some point that his voice actually changed pitch early on, helping his career and creating that vast tonal difference between some of his early work and his first popular songs.  Never was able to confirm it though.  The only public information about boxing injuries for him isn't to his head.
