I'm pretty sure eliminating all mosquitos would be bad for an ecosystem.  A lot of critters eat them, their larvae, and eggs.

I don't have any citations, but people have done studies and found that they aren't super important. One thing I remember from one was that no species that we found depends exclusively on mosquitoes at any stage in their life cycle.

Instead of a bacteria I suggest that they use a virus instead, The Lyssa virus to be exact. It would make an excellent vector to adapt to mosquitoes.

Not exclusively means the other species will need to pick up the breeding because they will be a larger part if the diet. If they don't, well, do the critters that don't exclusively feed on mosquitos the exclusive food of anything else? If not, what is the worst that could happen?
