Yeah, due to a near lifetime of really bad hayfever i have a really terrible sense of smell. Besides the pepperment and fish (assuming they mark a difference between fresh and not-fresh) i'll probably not be able to smell those unless they were really concentrated. Pretty sure i don't have dementia, though.

/how would i know?

My wife has had a poor sense of smell most of her life, as in can't smell a skunk at 40 ft. But her sense of taste, which is heavily dependent on smells, works just fine.

12 different smells for the low low price of only  $325.00

"This evolutionarily ancient special sense may signal a key mechanism that also underlies human cognition," noted study co-author Martha K. McClintock, PhD, the David Lee Shillinglaw Distinguished Service Professor of Psychology at the University of Chicago, who has studied olfactory and pheromonal communication throughout her career

I do wonder about how fundamental smell is to the organization of the brain. It is not all that important for humans, but many animals are very smell oriented, and small lifeforms are almost entirely ruled by chemical taxis. I wonder if the brain is wired along ancient smell pathways.

In humans smell/taste underlie a lot of the metaphors for evaluation - whether something is good or bad. One thing you can say about a rotten idea or job is that it stinks.

If old people can't evaluate things because they have lost their sense of smell then they are pretty far gone.

I'm not sure what's worse - not recognizing the smell of chloroform, or recognizing the smell of chloroform...
