So did the guy have a Milton Berle-grade schlong? Or was it just his ability to make girls rich and famous that they found so attractive?

NPR, Fark and the media in general have had more coverage of Hugh Hefner's death than almost anyone else. One thing that keeps coming up is that he wanted to feature the girl next door. Having seen the pictures in the articles I think his neighborhood is much different than mine. Hugh's neighbor is almost always blonde with a third of her body weight tied up in her breasts. Not saying it is wrong, not saying it is right just an observation

CSB -- my wife, when she was still in nursing school, was a little naive. Knowing this, the older nurses send her down to take care of an elderly patient for his bath. He is partially restrained because of dementia. At any rate, she washes the upper body with no issues, but he makes some fairly 'untoward' comments. When she got to the lower body she is confronted with a toddler arm holding an apple and he keeps begging for her sit on his lap. I guess the story was he was a life long bachelor, very quite, until the dementia kicked in. At any rate, it was whopper. No, she was never tempted to take him up on his offer.--end CSB

What blows me away are all the fundie prudes all over Facebook.

" I'm saying he is answering to God for creating lustful thoughts in people not for the airbrushed nudes rather for promoting a point of view almost nobody but the obscenely richest people could adhere to."

"Since he pushed pornography into society, objectified and degraded women and was a complete sleazebag, he's probably burning in hell or, if you believe in reincarnation, he's a baby girl about to get a reality check about how this society treats women. It's really sad that people can't tell the difference between good and evil anymore."

"He was basically a pimp and I hope they bury him with his robe and slippers."

This one was aimed directly at me personally when I said I had to check the calendar to see if it was 2017 and not 1917......
"You're obviously a porn addict and see nothing wrong with women being portrayed in this manner. Someday, when your granddaughter is raped don't pretend to be surprised or puzzled about how the breakdown of our society began that led to that moment. It began with Hef turning women into objects to be used for sex."

I was shocked to learn that his Marilyn Monroe (first print of Playboy) pic was 5 years old and he bought it off a calendar company.

And the fact he left Esquire to create playboy because they wouldn't give him a $5 raise.
Guy was surprisingly progressive but in his later years became a caricature of his old self.

I'm probably going to fark this story up badly but here goes anyway...

So Milton, Jack Benny, and two other stars of the era are at a restaurant getting ready to order and some drunk comes up to the table and starts bragging that his dick is bigger than Milton's. They try to get the guy to go the fark away but he's insistent. A few minutes of this goes on and finally Benny gets pissed. "For heaven's sake, Milton," he says, "just pull out enough to win so we can eat in peace."

zappaisfrank: What blows me away are all the fundie prudes all over Facebook.

They're not all fundies.  OK this is fundie:

I'm saying he is answering to God for creating lustful thoughts in people not for the airbrushed nudes rather for promoting a point of view almost nobody but the obscenely richest people could adhere to.

. . . drags God into it and portrays lustful thoughts as bad.  That's fundie.  But these. . . these are liberal, secular, feminist views in 2017:

Since he pushed pornography into society, objectified and degraded women and was a complete sleazebag, he's probably burning in hell or, if you believe in reincarnation, he's a baby girl about to get a reality check about how this society treats women. It's really sad that people can't tell the difference between good and evil anymore.

You're obviously a porn addict and see nothing wrong with women being portrayed in this manner. Someday, when your granddaughter is raped don't pretend to be surprised or puzzled about how the breakdown of our society began that led to that moment. It began with Hef turning women into objects to be used for sex.

The point here is not some dogmatic assault on sexual debauchery; it's that Hef "degraded and objectified" women by paying them to do things they knew up front they were going to do, since the results were literally on the cover of every damn magazine, and anyone who disagrees is a psychopathic pervert.
I honestly don't know how Millenials date without going batshiat crazy.  Women fought tooth and nail for centuries for sexual freedom, the right to want sex and have sex and seduce without being ostracized, and now they're in the midst of a left-right coalition of double slut-shaming -- the right still singing the same tune, but now the left wants to portray any adult woman having sex as a victim and any male having sex as an assailant, as if women are too stupid to have anything to do with sex without suffering permanent damage.

Look, prudes, if an adult woman actively seeks out the location of porn mag, asks to be hired, puts on a bunny costume and farks a 90-year-old rich guy, or takes her clothes off in front of a camera for a paycheck, she just might NOT need anyone's help.  She might be making a grown-up decision and maybe even enjoy it, though the "sex is damaging because men are inherently dangerous" message is reaching such a fever pitch in my ear that I gotta wonder these days.

Indeed.  Porn didn't exist before 1953, and then it was all Playboy after that.  And women get raped because of their revealing clothing - this is why it's so rampant on the beaches in the summer.  And rape
has only been happening since Playboy, too.
To paraphrase Frank,  I'm not a genius, but there's a whole lotsa times I wish I could say I'm not a moron.

bingethinker: Do they actually believe that no woman was ever raped or assaulted before Playboy existed?

No no, you don't understand.  Men have never been able to control their urges (not physiologically -- it's because of rape culture), and will thus always seek to victimize women.  BUT, the answer to this isn't to oppress women; they have a right to wear what they want and fark whom they want, so all we can ever do is hold men accountable for when women inevitably get raped instead of slut-shaming the victim.  That's how you arrive at the conclusion that if a woman wears skimpy clothing and then subsequently has sex, she must be a rape victim, and if a man sees a woman wearing skimpy clothing (or even just a picture thereof, such as in a Playboy magazine) and then has sex or even just finds himself wanting to get laid, he must be a rapist.  We need to protect women, not by controlling their behavior, but by always assuming the worst of male intentions.
Consider how this applies to getting drunk.  If a woman gets drunk and has sex, she was raped.  Because she has a right to do both but obviously getting drunk makes people more vulnerable so it's possible she didn't consent with a clear mind.  If a man gets drunk and has sex he's a rapist, because alcohol lowers inhibitions and we all know what men want.  So when two people get drunk and fark each other, it's invariably a man raping a woman.

So while women certainly have a right to strip for Playboy, and it's not like rape didn't exist before Playboy, Hef is a terrible man who made the world that much more dangerous for women because while women should wear what they want, obviously a woman wearing something skimpy to please men must have been manipulated into doing so and the increase in this portrayal of women as sexy will cause men to lose control and they must be held responsible for it because right now they're not.

It's a horrible mess of bits of truth and half good ideas completely undermined by large doses of crazy, but this is what 2017 feminists actually believe.  I'm not being hyperbolic; read back those quotes about granddaughters getting raped or Hef being reincarnated as a baby girl and tell me it doesn't all fit.

The esquire story about his movie nights at the end really painted a picture for me.

On one side I never imagined him a family man nor being close to his kids, that they had to ask him to move the nude picture of their mother because "It never occured to me it would bother them" really knocked loose the realization that Hugh never "grew up" in the doting father, children change your life sort of way.  He was the same man at 27 as 91 and well he had a life full of the kind of life that reading Playboy made you feel was in your grasp.

He wanted that life and he pursued it, I don't know if I would want that life, he definitely left a few trainwrecks in his past as things that got in the way of what he wanted were discarded or rent asunder.

But the man's dead and he left a legacy of trying to fill the shoes of an imaginary creation of his own design.

He made the world richer for being here and I won't begrudge him our differences.  But I will say that nothings free and his widow at the ripe age of 31 has a long life ahead of her and I hope she takes her new found wealth and autonomy well.

There are very real and legitimate reasons to think Hefner was a vile piece of shiat that have nothing to do with overzealous religion or skewed visions of feminist politics.

Just look at what he was doing.  He was a rich egotist who offered young women money to essentially be his servants with benefits.  He promised them money and then witheld it from them when they did anything to displease him (not participating in group sex, dressing wrong, acting wrong, not taking illegal drugs as directed, or because he felt like it). That's not a sex-fantasy, that's a narcisistic control fantasy. Maybe he wasn't a criminal, but that is weird and creepy and sick.  It's basically mass-prostitution where the girls didn't even have a guarantee of being paid.

So not getting paid and being used isn't prostitution, just more Hollywood business as usual.  I'm pretty sure they were just looking for exposure and would do anything to get it. They made the decision to be the sex slave of a rich 90 year old, horny-ass man.

Splinthar: The esquire story about his movie nights at the end really painted a picture for me.

The movie night stuff was always what stuck out as kind of weird to me.  It wasn't from Esquire, but I've seen or read about them before.  Basically Hef and his old (and I mean like his age old) would get together with the girls living at the house and watch old movies.  Movies from the 40s and 50s.  It must have been video of it because I remember just how bored and uninterested they (the girls) seemed when Hef did his bit where he gave a little movie intro before they started the movies.

From interviews and other things it seemed like he was a very smart man, which is another disconnect in my mind.   Many of these girls could barely string two sentences together.  What could they possibly talk about the majority of the time.

"You're obviously a porn addict and see nothing wrong with women being portrayed in this manner. Someday, when your granddaughter is raped don't pretend to be surprised or puzzled about how the breakdown of our society began that led to that moment. It began with Hef turning women into objects to be used for sex."

Oh wow.

dragonchild: bingethinker: Do they actually believe that no woman was ever raped or assaulted before Playboy existed?

Just an FYI, women dress to outdress other women. We do not dress for men.

Not if you were working for Hef.
