skyotter: xraygun: No idea how they are going to make puppeteers walk worth a damn.
I hope they ditch the idiocy of the mouths for hands. Nessus drinking a glass of carrrot juice just doesn't work. Having a mouth for a hand in a spacesuit isn't any good either. Thr whole tool maker deal does not work with an eye right on top of the appendage. Sorry, rant over.
There's a lot to work with there. Bey, Sigmund, Nathan. With all the retcon from the later books, they have years of material. I wonder where they start. Probably right at Louis's birthday, hopefully with the Earth turning the right direction.

I think the head-mouth-hands would translate visually better than the tripod gait.  Imagine this with two heads:

Yeah I like that thing!
But the whole eye on the hand/mouth.
Larry used to make horrible mistakes with that. I think he had Nessus holding a mirror and a comb, struggling with his tangled mane. The glass of carrrot juice was annoying. How's that go? Just doesn't work.

the_innkeeper: HugsAndPuppies: I can't wait!  It's about damned time someone did something with the 'Known Space' stories.  Niven created a rich universe with the Kzinti, Puppeteers, Slavers, Tnuctip, and Protectors, and today's CGI should be able to do them the justice they deserve.

He created the universe. Too bad he couldn't write worth a damn.

Mostly it was his human character interaction that sucked.  His aliens were great.  His worst character by far was Louis Wu.

What does she have to do with this?

I wish someone would do The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant series'.
There's a couple scenes I'd pull my own eye teeth to see

I don't look like I did in 1984, either.

Hawkin: I need to get around to reading Snow Crash. I've read Reamde and am working on Cryptonomicon (both borrowed from the local library), but they don't have Snow Crash, so I'll have to actually buy it, I suppose.

/response to Ringworld series:
//Yes, please!

Read The Diamond Age as well. I actually like it better than Snowcrash, and I like Snowcrash a lot.

I suggest you check out her recent photos.

She's rough, aged badly.

Plant Rights Activist: loonatic112358: Well, I wonder if they'll have Rithshara, or is that going to be dropped

I look forward to this and can't wait to see if they really capture the enormity of the ring world and it's instabilities

from what I can remember the whole second book was about perving around farking as many aliens as the author stand-in mc could

It *is* a bit long-winded that way, but the last part - confrontation under the map of mars and stabilisation of the Ringworld - is pretty good. I like the way he "defeats" the sunflowers, too.

Co-incidentally, I've just ordered Ringworld's Children and Fate of Worlds from The Book Depository. Maybe I should start reading Known Space again from scratch.

I've long thought that RINGWORLD, or any of the Known Space stories, would benefit from being done in
Japanese style animation.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this one.

That would be the best choice, if you were to animate it - but I think it needs live action + CGI to do it justice. A cartoon-style animated view of the Ringworld - say, the approach of Lying Bastard or Hot Needle of Enquiry - just wouldn't work for me. It's difficult enough to suspend disbelief when there's too much CGI (I'm looking at you, Avatar), so perhaps something like Firefly would work (not talking about the FF scripts, just the way the CGI blended with the real world).

Recoil Therapy: Hopefully they do Ringworld justice.  I've long thought that it would be a great playground for series writers to go to town on.  That thin little ribbon is a million miles wide.... there's enough room right there for whatever story you want to write let alone all the room all the way up & over the 'arch'...

Plus the range of species - Pak, and the various hominid species

But you'd lose the visual impact of that fantastic "turn-and-kick" trick. Two heads wide apart for triangulation, etc.

I haven't read Ringworld, but... what the problem with something using its mouth to manipulate objects? Most animals do. Our hands are the (lucky) exception, not the rule.

Because it would start to interfere with birthright lotteries, duh!

THIS! I re-read all the books every few years. I'd give someone's left testicle for a series just to see the Giants.
