doglover: Still no Discworld Watch crime series

A couple of the books have been animated - I've got a DVD of Soul Music that I keep meaning to watch again sometime.

The thing about Terry Pratchett is that the language is almost as much an attraction as the plot - noticeable when his mind started going and his last few books were quite wooden in contrast to earlier ones.

The cartoons have pretty crap animation quality and VO work.

Hogfather and Going Postal were pretty good.

Unfortunately, Charles Dance isn't getting any younger and Michelle Dockery has moved on to bigger things. Coyle and Foy are probably still available, but Moist and Adora only enter the series at the very end.

On one hand, yes.

On the other hand AHNK MORPORK WATCH PROCEDURAL.  fark, I could write a kickass 10 eppisode season with just Ctrl+C Ctrl+V from the watch books.

Terry was a genius, but he died and we have other good writers.

The animated Discworld stuff was done by British animation studio Cosgrove-Hall.  If you've seen 'Danger Mouse' (or any of a number of other things), you know their work.

Those adaptations weren't bad, but the more-cartoony look to the art did kinda distract from the power of the stories.  Again, the scripts and the acting were pretty good, but many people thought the art was less than what the material deserved.

I, also, loved the live action versions of Hogfather and Going Postal.

Unless it's only being shown in Super Duper IMAX Ringworld will look like "fifty feet of baby-blue Christmas ribbon one inch wide. String it in a circle, on edge on the floor, and put a candle in the middle" and nothing more.   Scale like that just doesn't fit in the human brain.

It *is* a bit long-winded that way, but the last part - confrontation under the map of mars and stabilisation of the Ringworld - is pretty good. I like the way he "defeats" the sunflowers, too.

That would be the best choice, if you were to animate it - but I think it needs live action + CGI to do it justice. A cartoon-style animated view of the Ringworld - say, the approach of Lying Bastard or Hot Needle of Enquiry - just wouldn't work for me. It's difficult enough to suspend disbelief when there's too much CGI (I'm looking at you, Avatar), so perhaps something like Firefly would work (not talking about the FF scripts, just the way the CGI blended with the real world).
