Remember back when Halloween specials used to mean something?

Ummm, no? They've never really meant anything.

Unless "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" is an allegory for our lost youth and disconnection with nature in an increasingly urbanized society.

In that case, okay.

This Is Halloween
Youtube xpvdAJYvofI

"This Is Halloween"
Boys and girls of every age
Wouldn't you like to see something strange?

Come with us and you will see
This our town of Halloween

This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Pumpkins scream in the dead of night

This is Halloween, everybody make a scene
Trick or treat till the neighbors gonna die of fright
It's our town, everybody scream
In this town of Halloween

I am the one hiding under your bed
Teeth ground sharp and eyes glowing red

I am the one hiding under your stairs
Fingers like snakes and spiders in my hair

This is Halloween, this is Halloween, Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween!

In this town we call home
Everyone hail to the pumpkin song

In this town, don't we love it now?
Everybody's waiting for the next surprise

'Round that corner, man hiding in the trash can
Something's waiting now to pounce, and how you'll scream!

This is Halloween
Red 'n' black, slimy green
Aren't you scared?
Well, that's just fine

Say it once, say it twice
Take a chance and roll the dice
Ride with the moon in the dead of night

Everybody scream, everybody scream

In our town of Halloween

I am the clown with the tear-away face
Here in a flash and gone without a trace

I am the "who" when you call, "Who's there?"
I am the wind blowing through your hair

I am the shadow on the moon at night
Filling your dreams to the brim with fright

This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween!
Halloween! Halloween!

Tender lumplings everywhere
Life's no fun without a good scare

That's our job, but we're not mean
In our town of Halloween

In this town
Don't we love it now?

Everybody's waiting for the next surprise
Skeleton Jack might catch you in the back
And scream like a banshee
Make you jump out of your skin
This is Halloween, everybody scream
Won't ya please make way for a very special guy

Our man jack is King of the Pumpkin patch
Everyone hail to the Pumpkin King, now!

This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween!

In this town we call home
Everyone hail to the pumpkin song

La la-la la, Halloween! Halloween! [Repeat]

Hanna Barbara did a really good version of The Halloween Tree. Of course it helped that Ray Bradbury wrote the screenplay and narrated it.

Halloween specials for kids are mostly forgettable, honestly.  There are a few that stand out as classics, but the rest tend to be products of the time and nothing more.

It's funny that I remember the Peanuts specials mostly for the music -- which means the source material, a daily strip, factors almost not at all into my memory of them. Charles Schulz's contribution was vast less to their memory than of Vince Guaraldi.

Granted, by the time I first encountered the Peanuts, it was long after Schulz had stopped giving a shiat and had started phoning in recycled pablum like he was Jim Davis. Nothing he made in my lifetime was relevant.

Wasn't the entire joke of that sketch that the gimmick was neither funny nor scary?  All of the humor was in the frustration of the straight-man characters and them trying to figure out what the point was in the absurdity.

Making a longer version of something intentionally un-funny feels like they're somehow missing the point of their own damned writing.  Was it being chuckleworthy just a complete accident?

Agreed. And although I can find the CB Christmas soundtrack everywhere (fantastic stuff), I've yet to find a CB Halloween soundtrack album. The spooky jazz riffs are fantastic in that special.

When were you born? On May 30, 1983, CBS aired What Have we Learned, Charlie Brown. The special highlights monuments to  World War I and II and emphasizes the sacrifices made by troops.

There's also the "Grinch Halloween Special" which apparently was an advertizement for LSD.  I remember watching it for awhile, realizing it would never begin to make sense and turning it off dissappointed.  Reviews should be googleble.

The Legend of Sleepy Jebbo

Mild-mannered Jebbediah Bush is having a bad day, made worse by a pumpkin-headed madman who keeps calling him a "low-energy loser". When his friends Little Marco and Lyin' Ted abandon him on a lonely primary road on Halloween, the orange menace returns to seal poor Jeb's fate.

Because I hate that movie with heat of a thousand suns. The uncanny valley effect, the hideous child creatures and the evil Santa are too much for me.
