HawgWild: List fails without Mandy.

Literally makes much of WW S1 unwatchable for us.  We'll do a complete re-watch periodically, but we either start with S2 or just skip all the episodes with more than a couple of minutes of Mandy in them.

The only consolation we take is that the writer's solution to getting her off the show was by the character's own incompetence.  (The whole thing with her Bartlett opposition-research stuff getting into the open.)

So Wesley Crusher doesn't even make the list of terrible characters that had to be written out. Wow, how meta can the interweb get.

dragonchild: As for Pulaski, I thought she made Star Trek: TNG much more interesting than Bev Crusher. Here was a woman who wasn't physically attractive (Troi was already the eye candy and otherwise more of a liability), could be abrasive, was even somewhat of a bigot toward Data but also had the air of unimpeachable competence. I thought Diana Muldaur gave her a pretty good identity and plenty of chemistry in her own way -- the others played off her flaws

She was a McCoy ripoff and fans at the time saw right through that.

I like the show, and yeah, they're mostly all terrible characters.  I was just pointing out that the character of Dale wasn't written out of the show for being a terrible character - if that was the way it worked, the show would be about a series of empty sets, with the occasional zombie shambling around aimlessly.

Scrappy Doo saved that franchise. It's not even considered canon anymore without at least one mention of "Puppy Power".

CSB time -
My best friend in high school's cousin was (still is) Byron Cherry, the blonde replacement Duke boy.  No, he didn't last, but the producers did give him a gen-u-ine, fully painted, complete with a roll cage, General Lee, which he brought back to Atlanta.
Byron let my friend and I drive it around occasionally and one Friday afternoon in '85 or '86 we took it to our old HS for a tour of the grounds.  It didn't suck.

She looked good, period.  And I would argue that she was a way better actress than Gates McFadden
at any age.  She was a victim of a piss poor writing team and barely competent direction on TNG.

At least I hope so; otherwise that means she wasn't popular on her next gig, LA LAW, and that led to
her exiting the show like this:

I think he was also meant as a satire of the whole suddenly-introduced-poorly-written new character trope. They didn't even come up with a real name - the show was centered around six characters, so they just called the new kid Seven.

I like how in Big Bang Theory, we get ample time with Leonard's mom and dad, Penny's mom, dad and brother, Sheldon's mom and some time with his hot sister, etc.  Even an episode with Sheldon's MeMa (grandma).  Every major character has family that's featured regularly on the show.  But Amy...well, we get to see her mom one time on a (very uncomfortable) video chat.  And that's it, we never see her again.  Aside from that and a rare reference here or there, she may as well not even have parents or family.  I've always wondered why Amy's family is basically left out, and kept waiting for some explanation about how she and her family are estranged or something, but no, nothing.  It's never addressed.  Did the writers just forget or did I miss something in one of the episodes that explains their absence?

From what I recall from Amy's introduction - Amy's mom was just a less-interesting version of Sheldon's mom.  Like, doesn't understand her child, tries to force "normal" behavior on her, etc., only without any of the "funny God stuff".

So - this "article" is not informative very much and says little to it's premise about "unpopularity". It is in effect a listicle in disguise.

Here's the list and my thoughts:

1. Coy & Vance Duke - Duke of Hazard: Unpopular? Yes, but weren't removed because of their unpopularity. CBS came to terms with Wopat and Schneider and they came back. And that was that.
2. Nikki Carpenter - MacGuyver - Dont know enough except the article has no documentation that she was removed due to hatred from the fans.
3. Eve - Dawson's Creek: This seems more like the result of internal showrunning changes than fan hatred. I'm not saying it's not true, its just the article once again kinda throws out ideas but no articles or links to support their claim that the character was sacked due to unpopularity rather than writing and production staff changes.
4. Vikki Costa - Just Shoot Me: Thee article mentions ratings drops. It would be cool to have a link to that. (Too lazy to google...)
5. Riley  - Buffy TVS: - The reason follows, but again, do we have anything to back this up? It makes total sense, as no one likes the "Different Actor Same (basic) character"-trope..
6. Chuck - Happy Days - An obvious entry, but was he 'hated"? It just seems more like he was so superfluous it made sense to just let him go rather than fans not liking him. Who knows.
7. Tori - Saved By The Bell: According to the article A) The series was ending B) They already shot the finale and C) the character/actors she was replacing already had other gigs, so while yes, she may have been an unliked character, her removal had nothing to do with that!
8. Nikki and Paolo - Lost: This actually makes sense, though I would suggest that if the characters of Nikki and Paolo were introduced more gradually over the course of a couple of seasons, fans would have been fine with them; their backstory and adventures went any better or worse than everyone else's, really. But out of nowhere having 2 new characters shoved down our throats would make any fan annoyed.
9. Pulaski - ST:TNG:I havent heard these rumors about friction in-staff. Perhaps Wil could offer his insight? (fat chance, hahah)

In the end, it just seems that this listicle is more like "Chracters that left shows and were never seen or referenced again". I suppose Farker fans of said shows could offer more insight?

Remember the episode where we find out Amy's mother used to lock her in the cupboard Christine-style?

She's obviously somewhat terrified of her (or at least, her disapproval).

/As opposed to Leonard, who is terrified of his mother but also desperately craves her approval
//Once Amy had other people around her, she noped right out of that abusive shiat

I didn't like Pulaski...at ALL, but she DID have a character.  She had a personality.  I didn't CARE for it, but she was a unique character on a show that still had yet to find it's "character's legs".

That being said, poor Worf had his pain stick thing with Geordi (ok), and Wesley, Pulaski and Chief O'Brien?  It's like when you HAD to invite the whole class but only the unpopular kids show up to your birthday party

HELLO?    HELLO?    I THINK YOU FORGOT ME!    HELLO?

Mandy was just a designated villain that epitomized everything wrong with DC and seemed to exist just to cause friction with everyone else. It was a sweet mercy when she was written out. There were enough other people and things to serve as villains without a designated one as part of the main cast.

Here's an obscure one. Dodo Chaplet. She was a short-lived companion in the early days of Doctor Who. She was literally written out of the show mid-story. Dodo gets mind controlled by some evil supercomputer and isn't seen after part 2 of The War Machines. One of the other companions explains that she's gone to the country to recuperate. The actress' contract did not extend past the second episode so, bye.
