(Fark)   What do you think of the idea of requiring display of a banner reading, "for entertainment purposes only" above the screen on programs like F&F? Or a banner reading, "this information has been been fact-checked" above actual news programs?   ( fark.com) divider line

Having a minimum standard of journalism to be labeled news could be a good idea, as long as it was regulated by the industry instead of the US government.  Just think what Trump would do with that power.

Instead of "fact checked" I think a more useful thing would be for the industry to form independent vetting agencies that could verify anonymous sources, allowing them to be labeled as a "verified source" in articles.

Yeah; I was thinking of the programs that are viewed by their consumers as news but which are really opinion. In terms of the "this has been vetted" blurb, I was thinking about something like the Associated Press - a service that could apply its seal to qualifying programs to indicate they were of high quality - like the Good Housekeeping seal or Underwriters Laboratories or whatever.

The problem is that Far Right media types will still label any news they don't like - verified or not - as Fake News. We have independent fact checkers now, and they have been hammered by the Far Right as being biased, "Liberal", and Fake... all because they tell the truth. Reality means literally nothing to them, at this point. They will paint the Truth as Falsehoods, all while pushing their Alternative Facts, and at least 63 million Americans will eat it up.

Industry self-regulation can be just as bad as government regulation, isn't that basically what you have now that allows F&F to pretend to be news, but when called just quietly call itself entertainment? It has to be an independent body. These things, though, tend to end up industry led anyway.

Yes, I agree - I had in mind an independent industry related organization, like an association of journalists.

Yeah, but who watches the watchers?

Also, don't watch commentary, watch news. Talking heads are just wingnut welfare. A single journalist in the real world is worth 10 on a sound stage.

Sadly, this is the reality of it.

It wouldn't matter if you presented the actual source to some people, with proper documentation and video or live streaming of what they don't agree with, they will just scream LIBS LIBS LIBS LIES! and run away.

I like farking around with that guy in my office. I'm an anarchist, now. It makes him boil :) He's stuck on Cultural Marxism and tries to call me a communist. I'm neither, and especially not what he calls me.

The problem is that we have a culture in which people don't see value in holding beliefs that correlate with reality.

Too wordy.  Need three banners.  News, editorial, and talking heads.  It is amazing how many people confuse what is blatantly editorial as news.  What is even more amazing is that they think the same for talking heads.

Here is a curious thing about "Fake news".

The Right has been complaining about fake news for pretty much the entirety of Trump becoming a candidate up til now.

As of yesterday, with the final words coming out of Facebook and their hand in enthusiastically accepting Russian money for news that actually WAS fake, we now know there was truth to the "fake news" allegations.  And it was created and used by the Right!

In other words...  There is fake news out there.  And it was used to WIN the Presidential election for the Right.  All the while complaining that the true news was fake.

What the actual fark is wrong with this world?!

It's called Regulatory Capture and is one of the reasons we have crony capitalism.

Like that would matter in a country where people believe professional wrestling is real.

"For entertainment purposes only".  Seems to fit.  Isn't it pretty much aimed at those who view the lottery as an investment strategy?

Pinner: How about teaching critical thinking in schools?

I had a class in ninth grade called "Semantics" that went over (at a ninth grade level) the different kinds of arguments, a little bit of Logic, and a kind of introduction as to how to read statistics.  One of the best classes I ever took - even pretty useful in how to read and take tests.  That was in a public school, one which was classified as a 'slum school' due to the low average income of the community.  The difference was that it was taught by a man who found it interesting and was excited about teaching it.

I'm not thinking of myself; I'm thinking of people who are channel surfing and stop on Fox deluded by the idea that what they're seeing is news. Not the hard-core fans; I'm sure we're not going to change them.
