question: do they teach the root causes of the French Revolution at rich people school, or do they just blame it all on communism and gloss over the gory bits so as to not offend the elites?

because this all seems dangerously close to a 'let them eat cake' moment of massive clueless arrogance.  waving one's wealth in front of a bunch of poor people who just lost what little they had to various/sundry storms isn't going to help the GOP one bit.

My question is, does the SS put a stop to it if Presidents past and present get physical, or is it above their pay grade? And what happens if one President's SS people attack another President after said President attacks the fist detail's President? Does the second detail have to attack the first? Do they pull them apart physically? Do they let it all play out?

Listen on! Listen on! This is the truth of it. Fighting leads to killing, and killing gets to warring, and that was damn near the death of us all. Look at us now, busted up and everyone talking about hard rain! But we've learned! By the dust of 'em all, Bartertown's learned. Now, when men get to fighting, it happens here, and it finishes here! Two men enter, one man leaves.

TWO MEN ENTER, ONE MAN LEAVES!
TWO MEN ENTER, ONE MAN LEAVES!
TWO MAN ENTER, ONE MAN LEAVES!

Cuz, if it were me, I'd say that once a President, always a President and no PotUS should be above another PotUS.

So, if Obama or W marched into the oval office and just attacked Trump, the men in glasses and suits would all take 5 and wait for it all to play out and maybe even place bets or something. Y'know, as long as it was just fisticuffs and not like guns and knives.

It would be another check and balance to make sure the president is never safe entirely, and that would be something to consider when voting in the primary. Theodore Roosvelt knew judo.

for an administration that's extremely sensitive to how they are portrayed in the press, you'd figure they of all people would understand that  holding a golf tournament while a third of the country is either on fire, flooded out or cleaning up from massive storm damage looks INCREDIBLY bad.

but then again this is also the administration that let a fashion victim first lady show up to a disaster area in highly inappropriate footwear.  so there's that.

never mind.  we're f*cked.

And make a comment where he "thinks" he's off-camera (but knows and makes sure he's on record of some sort) that "This is what a real President would do for his people".

I can just imagine the twittershats that would follow from that.

If I were Obama, I'd take every opportunity to be around him, just to drive his nerves up the wall, laugh at his ass-clenching and petulant pouting, and mock the living shiat out of him at every turn. In short, for the lulz. Hell, I'd be doing things like saying out loud "Oh, hey, can you get me a different club? My hands are a bit too big for this one. You sure this isn't a little girl's golf club?" (and make sure it's the exact same kind of golf club that Trump uses), staring at him from across the dinner table and laughing, and asking him things like "Hey there, Two Scoops! Getting ready for your big subpoena, um I mean, big summit?".

I honestly don't know.  But...if I had to guess, I think Trump hates/fears Obama because Obama is something that literally cannot exist in trump's universe.  A successful black man with the respect of the entire country?  oh you'd better BELIEVE that has to be expunged from history.  But even that isn't what really bugs the Donald.  Donny is constantly being compared to Obama....and failing to meet the standards set by his predecessor.  Trump can't STAND being seen as a failure.  in his world, he DOES NOT fail.  when failure happens, he fires the designated employee and ignores his mistakes.  But he can't 'fire Obama' or stop people from pointing out how much better Obama was at running the white house.  so all trump can do is try and scrub Obama's legacy out of the country.

If a lot of them move to the mainland it could really mess up the Republicans on future elections.  As long as they move to states where the Russians haven't hacked the machines to count out a close GOP victory.

assuming we don't implode into another dark age of christian fear and ignorance, yes - I have little doubt that any objective review of history will utterly savage the GOP and trump for their actions.

but trump doesn't think in those terms.  all he knows is that the country is comparing him to a black guy and they like the black guy way more than him.  that sort of thing is apparently so distracting that its becoming the driving force behind much of what trump laughingly calls his legislative agenda.

That and it seems like in addition to his dislike of Obama he has a big issue with black guys who people might like better than him because they are good at sports and actually do things to help other Americans who aren't on the KGB payroll.

Expect that Puerto Rico will be forgotten by the weekend.

The media -- broadcast social media and traditional broadcast media did this, got us to we are today, along with it's vulnerable exposure to manipulation.

It used to be broadcasting required capital -- from the printing press to the tv studio and organisation.  It doesn't now.  Now it's a phone, tablet or computer keyboard.  This isn't one on one, it's about broadcasting and followers.

Traditional broadcast media has lost it.  There is no reality check when 70K Russian Twitter bots pollute, because local TV is more interested in being at the front of the rumor, gossip and inflammatory rhetoric.

And they're an institution of ephemera.  Can't be responsible.

I think as the disaster response unfolds (or lack thereof), we're going to see a lot of attention put on this relationship on the foreign press. It's going to be an enormous diplomatic black eye like the Civil Rights struggle in the 1960s.

I think it's a confusing (for him) mix of love attraction and jealousy, which he can only express in the form he knows, that of hate and aggression, like a jilted lover.

orangehat: Good luck with that... once we all get through this distraction history will not be kind to him. He's the least effective president since Harrison.

Trump hasn't been ineffective.  He's been ineffective in pursuing his own (and the GOP's) agenda, but he's caused great harm and before his time in the white house is done he'll cause even more.  I would gladly take ineffective over the bumbling into disaster this president seems keen on.

Here's a question for you to ponder while you're being outraged by yet another Trump distraction.

Do you actually even care if he visits Puerto Rico?

And if so is it because you think him visiting Puerto Rico would somehow be beneficial to the people of Puerto Rico? Or is it because you feel like he "should" go? Despite the fact his presence or absence has absolutely no impact on the relief efforts.

If he goes, he's not going to personally deliver supplies or rebuild anyone's houses. He's going to pose for photos and furrow his brow and lament the devestation, shake a few hands and kiss a few babies. But people act like he MUST pose for those photo ops or Puerto Rico will disappear from the Earth.

It's amazing that "will Trump go to Puerto Rico?" is so much more important to Fark than "is anyone still alive in Puerto Rico"? My neighbor is Puerto Rican and her entire extended family is there. She hasn't asked once whether Trump is going to visit. Oddly enough she doesn't seem concerned about Trump's travel schedule or if he's playing golf. She only seems to care if her family is alive and getting help. I'll be sure to let her know people completely unaffected by the disaster are trying to score political points off the backs of her family.

hobbes0022: The way The US treats Puerto Rico is farked up.  Not officially a state, but controlled as a terrirtory so they are not allowed to fully govern themselves.  They need to have a representive come to the Senate and tell them, either make us an official state, or accept our right to independence.  This half measure bullshiat is not working, we don't want to be the unofficial third-world version of the United States.

They've had referendums before, each barely failed at like 49.something to 50.something. They have to have the support of the people before they can ask for statehood. I predict another one very soon, with the Republican Congress telling them to fark off.

This has to be the easiest thing to do as POTUS.

"Puerto Rico's all farked up? Send everything. Send the Navy/Marines to search for and evacuate people. Send the Army Engineers to restore power and fix some key roads and plug that leaky farking dam. Send the Red Cross to feed, clothe, and doctor people up. Get Marine 1 ready because I want to be there first thing in the morning to do everything I can, even if that only amounts to my presence encouraging people that I'm there and I care. I want that island to be fully inhabitable and functionable again in a month. So get on the farking phone."

That's what President Skeleton Man would do.

He might try, but he obviously has no idea where supplies should go in a pickup truck.

That's his job. That's what we're paying him for. And it does demonstrate that he's seen the damage first hand on the ground and if he were any other person he might have some sympathy for these people and do more to get supplies to them. Talk to the people actually on the ground trying to get the relief to the people that need it, instead of his appointees that will tell him what he wants to hear.

How do you look in a pant suit, and do you smile enough?  These things matter to the average voter.

I'm pretty sure the most recent vote was like +90% for statehood, but as you mention, congress just tells them to fark off and know their place.
