Weaver95: what....the hell....!?

Puerto Rico's a photo op for Trump. Can't have a Democrat fly down there, win the sympathies of Puerto Ricans struggling to stay alive until next Tuesday, and fly back with harrowing tales of horror and suffering that Trump can't exploit. And he certainly can't have Congress doing something without him, like waiving the Jones Act, on their own recognizance. It has to be Trump's idea, and he can only have that idea after he shows up, cheers about the size of the crowd, spews more campaign shiat at them, leaves, comes back here, and relays harrowing tales of a broke government that, despite being warned, persisted with their debt.

This is the White House, "controlling the message."

I'm not condoning it - I'm just referring to the same quote the White House used when it tried to manipulate the press pool. And he can't forbid them from going. He's just misusing his power as Commander-in-Chief to forbid them from going there on military vehicles or vessels. Nothing's stopping Congresspeople - or anyone else, for that matter - from going there on private vehicles or vessels (including their own.)

It's just Trump being an ass. He's determined to show everyone that he's the daddy, even though we already know he's just another friggin' tool.

Exactly. Can't have Congresspeople running photo ops with soldiers or sailors, after all. That's Trump's gig.

this really pisses me the hell off tho.  trump doesn't get to hide his mistakes.  NOBODY in government does.  transparency is something I take seriously, and if trump really is dropping the ball on his job duties then the country SHOULD know about it.

But to flatly deny members of congress access when this is literally their JOB DESCRIPTION to go and visit these places and go back to D.C. and cast votes on the basis of what they saw for themselves....that's not 'politics'.  that's not normal either.  that's gotdamn psychotic.

how much you wanna bet that trump will get the military to either ban or severely curtail civilian flights into or out of the disaster area?

Doubtful, honestly - the FAA's indicating that about 36 or so flights an hour are happening, a mix of military, commercial, and humanitarian flights. Ticket prices are a bit... high, but if a Congressperson wants to get to San Juan, they can without too much difficulty.

Moving about the island may be a bit more difficult, I expect...

not to this large a degree, and trump's escalating with his offensive behavior.  its almost as if he WANTS people screaming their rage at him.

I'm thinking as he speaks, since their primary language isn't English, that Trump will try to say something in their language. Someone should get him to practice: "Ich bin ein Berliner"

2017-09-28 05:34:03 AM
So... Shall we start a Death Pool of sorts, to determine what disaster/war Trump will exploit/start, in order to set aside the normal Democratic checks & balances system? With Mueller breathing down his neck, there's no way a Trump Presidency survives until 2020, so he's going to take some sort of action to stop that from happening. And since he's pretty much taken on the Dictator role, the only questions left are "What event will he choose?" and "When will he make this move?"

I'm thinking he attacks or forces a war with Best Korea, conventional weapons only, and suspends the Constitution for the duration of the emergency, taking total control of the Federal government (all branches) for himself. Suspending the SCOTUS and Congressional Houses immediately, for 'failing to act in the best interests of the country" (i.e., not pushing through his agenda), etc.

Because the restriction he's using is limiting them from using military aircraft.  The White House and Pentagon are saying that they need space aboard military flights for relief efforts too much to spare any space for Congressmen.

If they could get there by private means, he couldn't stop them.

. . .of course, with the disaster damage, only military aircraft can get to the island, as the airport in San Juan is out of service. . .

2017-09-28 07:16:02 AM
Predicted this.  No photos.  No audio.  Excuse - National security or relief efforts.  Certainly no pictures of bodies.  Remember Bush at Dover AFB and the coffins on the plane.  Venezuela is new on the banned countries list.  That's the nearest large neighbor of Puerto Rico.  The Jones act has denied Puerto Ricans $19B in revenue, even before this and contributed to their situation.

Doubt it. Conservatives get off on the thought of dead children and other races. You'll see some of them along to make their typical pussy excuses soon enough.

"It's too hard!  We shouldn't try!"
"I don't want to share!"
"I don't like n******."
"Mine mine mine!"

In the end it's all variations of children's excuses.

Since Puerto Rico doesn't pay federal taxes, most republicans don't actually consider them US citizens, and routinely lump them in with the 'illegals'.....despite most republicans doing everything in their power to avoid paying federal taxes.

He is commander and chief.  He and his generals can decide who gets a free ride on a military transport.  The other issue is that if the military takes them there, they also need to send enough troops to protect them and take care if them.  All distractions from providing repeat. If they want to go... they can charter a flight or go commercial and then be responsible for their own accommodations and security.

Simple... the military ain't got time for their nonsense.

/still think Trump is an idiot... but he is probably doing what the military is counseling him to do.

If he were actually barring them, it wouldn't be: Bowsher v. Synar prohibits different branches from ordering one another around like that. What Trump is actually doing is ordering military aircraft not to carry members of Congress to Puerto Rico: in other words, it's an Executive-to-Executive order, not an Executive-to-Legislative. Congress is free to go there, though it's up to them to find a ride. Neat trick, that; I am forced to give points for style.

Possible short-term ways around would include if any pilots out there would be willing to fly members of Congress in. Longer-term, Congress should probably a couple of civilian planes of its own, free of Executive control, but there's all kinds of crap that would need to go into implementing something like that, and Congress needs rides to Puerto Rico sooner than this can be done.

2017-09-28 07:44:36 AM
Trump doesn't have the power to 'bar' travel there. He can and has said the military isn't going to take them. The military has better uses for its resources in an emergency than ferrying tourists. If they want to go that badly they can fly in non-military craft, as Luis Gutierrez already has.

This. These planes have some seating, which isn't going to be removed to make more room for supplies. These will simply be unused most of the time on these trips, which is why Congress-critters usually can snag them for their use to go here or there. It saves money, as those planes would be flying with or without them, and it is just Trump trying to stop the Democrats from upstaging his visit in early October.

The best thing to happen here would be for 'someone' to take pictures of these empty seats, and leak them to make it clear just how ridiculous Trump is being. Cargo goes in the cargo area, not in the limited seating area, which could have saved the country thousands if Congress-critters weren't banned from using them.

BTW, why ban Congress-critters from using seating on military flights to PR? If he was really concerned about military flights being used appropriately, shouldn't he have banned Congress-critters from flying on any military plane, period? Yeah, that would make more sense, so obviously this was done to forestall Democrats from doing photo ops in the hardest hit areas of PR, to make Trump look bad.

What a POS.

This is one of those times when even GOP congresscritters need to turn on Trump.  They should NOT tolerate a President telling them where they can or can't go, that's a huge overreach and would set a horrible precedent.
