I don't think trump realizes yet that he just convinced all Puerto Ricans everywhere to vote solid Democrat for the rest of their natural lives....?

then again, trump doesn't think brown people are human beings so who knows what the f*ck he thinks anymore.

Puerto Ricans don't vote in national elections. They vote in the Presidential  primaries, but that's it. They send one Representative to Congress, but that person doesn't get to vote on legislation. They're even more helpless in some ways than D.C. (who gets 3 electoral votes), but at least PR has some autonomy on local law.

In other words, why would Republicans care?

well gee, if the island is uninhabitable and every can easily migrate to the united states....ya think a sudden influx of democratic voters HIGHLY motivated to kick trump and the GOP in the balls might help the Dems in 2018?

If I were the democrats, I'd pull copies of every voter coming off that island and make sure they got some help...and a bit of campaign literature/voter registration card.

and the worst part?  my local trumpers are seething with rage over this whole disaster.  its completely and totally bizarre.  the comments on pennlive (and other spots around the net) are full of comments blaming the victims in PR for 'not being prepared' and 'getting what they deserved'.  i'm not sure how, what or even why anyone 'deserves' to get slammed by a cat 4 hurricane but that's what's coming out of trumplandia tonight.

there's something broken in America.  this ain't right.

decided against doing so as "a lot of people that work in the shipping industry...don't want the Jones Act lifted."

So what happened to the "they already have more ships than they can handle" excuse from yesterday?

This. Accelerating mass emigration from PR to the mainland by foot-dragging on recovery efforts doesn't make sense even as a narrow political calculation by the GOP.

Pretty much nothing but his usual bigotry explains Trump's cavalier attitude to the Puerto Rico crisis.

Where would the money come from to transport them and get them resettled? There's 3.4 million people there. Many have absolutely nothing but the clothes on their back. Where would we put them? What kind of assistance could we give them? Where would they get jobs? If Trump gets his way on the tax plan, our economy will crater again just like it did under Bush. Too much investment capital headed into the stock and bond market, very little headed towards people who buy actual real things like food and clothing and cars.

most of them have relatives here in the states already.  believe me, anyone/everyone with a relative and/or a bed/crash space available is already either in line for a ticket, or getting one bought for them as they wait in line at the airport for their plane outta there.  its not like there's anything left for them in Puerto Rico anymore.

I think we're going to see a LOT of people leave PR and come here to stay.  most likely, they'll settle in areas already established by friends, relatives and family.  NYC, spots up and down the east coast, Texas, Florida, blah blah

We could call it by a catchy name. Something like, I'm just spit balling here, Tammany Hall.

No seriously, I do think snagging those voters when they resettle is a great idea.

i'd grab a copy of everyone coming thru customs to resettle from PR to the mainland united states and hand them an update of trump's comments/inactions and a voter registration form.

i'm tired of playing nice guy with the trumpers.  we need to organize and push constantly to get these racist f*cktards out of the government.

Most tend to relocate to already blue places like New York or New Jersey. They might help turn Florida to reliably blue instead of swing, but the last thing Florida needs right now is several hundred thousand to a million more destitute people. The richer areas of PR are doing okay at the moment and will make it okay, so those that would come to the mainland are those that have literally nothing.

oh the usual - friends, family, public assistance....or they'll end up homeless and in various/sundry shelters.  nobody has any answers to these questions.  almost nothing has been worked out yet on Puerto Rico.  Trump seems to be too busy losing a slap fight with the NFL and embarrassing himself on twitter to answer questions about how he plans on rebuilding that island.

They really and truly cannot afford to. They are in debt up to their eyeballs, and they have a ton of people receiving Medicaid and SNAP and other Federal assistance. Also, the Republican Congress refused to allow them to refinance their debt like an actual state can. And now they're being denied the kind of assistance that Florida and Texas just got.

Also, Trump would send in the troops  and charge quite a few people with insurrection.

2017-09-28 03:14:12 AM
Temporarily waiving the Jones Act for Puerto Rico "would take American first responders out of the loop and replace them with Filipino or Russian or Chinese crews,"

Yeah. That's exactly how it works.  All those people who came down to help othes not starve and not die notice the Koreans and the Chinese are trying to help and then, well, I mean, what's the point any more?  Where's the fun in it if you have to share the spotlight with... ugh... immigrants.. and their immigrant things... bringing all their... their immigrant food... and immigrant water.  I mean, at that rate, all the starving people will all be healthy overnight and then what, huh?  It's rude. That's what it is.  Might as well just burn whatever you brought and go back home, at that point.

rich people might be ever so slightly less rich, so in trump's mind that totally justifies all the pain and suffering in Puerto Rico.  plus, if trump drives property values down far enough, he can let his rich real estate buddies buy up the land on the cheap, deport the poor people and then build TONS of rich people houses and rich people resorts.

The Jones Act is a bullshiat piece of legislation that has long ago outlived its purpose and needs to be repealed.  Even odder is it's usually Democrats defending it as it mostly affects union jobs.  You'd think the Republicans would be jumping at the chance to get rid of it.

not without a US mailing address.  however, once they move to the mainland, then yes - they can vote just like any other citizen of this country.  that's the bit I'm wondering if trump understands...that he's pissing off pretty much the entire latino vote for all of the country.
