Why, did she run out of SHIPLAP?

One of the few HGTV shows the wife watches that I could tolerate enough to not instantly change the channel as soon as it came on.

Or large letters and big clocks.

I like the show mostly for him, he seemed genuinely funny.

Given that people whose houses are being renovated are turning them into AirBnB locations and profiting off of them as such, I wouldn't be surprised if the Gaines' said "That's not what this is about."

Back when we still paid money for cable, HGTV is basically the only channel my wife would watch.  Fixer Upper was by far their best program.

I wish them the best.

Good.  Chip came off as a manchild and a dufus.  It really distracted from the architectural inspiration of them installing barn doors everywhere.

Back when I had cable, one of my favorites was Holmes on Homes, on DiscoveryHome.

These days I don't see these shows except at my sister's house. She likes Fixer Upper and Property Brothers.  I can't stand the one with the couple that's always fighting (she has expensive taste), and the one with the couple in Mississippi who sometimes seem to bully the homebuyers into accepting stuff they're not keen on.

What scares me about shiplap is it could lead to the return of cheap, crappy wood paneling from the 70-80s.  Slow down on the wood walls woman.  Let's not get crazy here.

I have 2 of Mike's books, both are excellent. What i liked about his show(even though he sometimes went WAY overboard) was that he tried to educate you along the way as to WHY what the previous person did was unacceptable, and why what he was doing was correct. It made you a smarter homeowner, to the point I cannot farking stand Flip or Flop because you can literally see those 2 cutting so many god damn corners that you know in 2-3 years it's going to have to be fixed, well AFTER their "home warranty" runs out.

Funny thing I watched about Mike on some behind the scenes thing, he throws his own money at a project after the network has said they are at their budget for a project. Like, they said on average he was spending 60K a year on other peoples houses of his OWN money because while they were redoing a kitchen, maybe he felt they needed new appliances, so he was forced to buy them himself. They had a woman who was hired onto the show basically to tell Mike "no."

I used to watch Trading Spaces. That Hildy woman was nuts. She glued hay to walls, covered one room in cardboard (attached to the drywall with liquid nails), painted a huge picture of her own face on the wall of some sorority sisters....her work was uniformly awful. I often wondered how many horrified reactions ended up on the cutting room floor.

Serious question for someone in the biz: Why are like 90% of the shows on HGTV, DIY, and the like produced in Canada?

Yes! I loved the same thing about his show, and I learned so much. And you could tell that he was really putting his heart into making things right for people. It doesn't surprise me at all that he spent some of his own money to do it.

Apparently he's going to have a new show including his children, starting next year. link

Exactly. "I'm spending a bunch of money to upgrade a house and I totally want the walls to look like an eighth-grader's shop project." Ugh.

It does kind of look like horizontal paneling, though. *shudder*

I cracked up when I found out that the fundies were thrilled to find out that the Gaines attended a church led by a pastor who's apparently anti-LGBT and the same fundies collectively lost their shiat when the Gaines started selling products in Target stores because Target doesn't give a damn what their customers identify themselves as gender-wise when it came to using their restrooms.

The sudden reversal of "WE LOVE YOU CHIP AND JOANNA! WE LOVE YOUR SHOW!" to "SHAME ON YOU! NO LONGER WATCHING YOUR SHOW!" was whiplash inducing.

Once I started making fun of how Joanna wants to cover everything in "shiplap" my wife says now she can't un-hear it.

I still watch it with her though. There's something about Joanna Gaines... I don't know what, but it makes me feel like the filthy old man I am. She's insanely attractive to me.

She'd probably just cover my dick in shiplap though.

We put in real 3/4 pine shiplap in our mud room. Beat drywall joints and gives me easy access to everything behind it (I woodwork so patching is easy enough)

Of course, my old house has some nice old vertical wood paneling (the good 1950s stuff, not the crappy 1970s version) so it works

That woman would cover your shiplap in shiplap. I think she gets a check in the mail from the lumber industry for every time she uses the word shiplap.

I remember the hay episode - quite often the participants would have to pretend to like the finished product. You could always tell by their facial expressions that they were horrified.

in moderation to accent a room, sanded and a proper finish put on the wood.  The 1x3 topping it was hand filed to match the shape of the trim it was meeting at the corner.  Wife calls me a dork for doing that last part, but I know it's a detail that sets it apart.  You won't see much of that on those shows.

It's not that high, but it feels like it.  Canada has a law that at least 40% (or so) of all programs shown in the country are produced there.  The US doesn't have that, so they comply in Canada, and reshow them in the US.

Because Canada is smart and gives huge tax breaks/incentives to production companies that film there.  Same reason so much stuff is done in North Carolina.
