Oliver is rapidly approaching Jon Stewart-level comic genius and satire.

2017-09-25 01:17:30 PM
Oliver then went after Fox News host Judge Jeanine Pirro for her harsh words to the NFL anthem protestors:

"America has been incredibly good to every one of you from the time you displayed talent in sports as a youth. America's allowed you to shine and become financially prosperous. There are so many of you who make tens of millions of dollars... Shame on you, shame on all of you!"

Interesting logic.  A select few black athletes make good money so racism is magically fixed and no one should speak of it again.

Did her law degree come from Trump U?

Let's apply her logic to all rich people. They should all be grateful, and do you know what is a great way to show your gratitude toward your nation? Paying your taxes. I wonder who has a higher effective tax rate, Donald or LeBron?

Of course.  All the money in the world doesn't change that.

Again, to my earlier point, doing well does not mean racism doesn't exist and that you haven't been affected by it.  And this all started not because of the racism Kaepernick personally experienced, but as a means of highlighting the violence by police against other African Americans.  His personal wealth has nothing to do with how others are treated.

Their arguments against this are dumb.  If the players, celebrities, and others chose a different way to protest and highlight the issues, folks would be biatching about that, too.  The Trumps and Pirros of the world would still want black people to sit down, mind their place, and shut up.

The comment theme I've been seeing has mostly amounted to "If you're going to protest about us ignoring your plight, at least do it in a way I can more comfortably ignore."

To a lot of these people, sporting events are pretty much the only time minorities are ever even visible to them, so it's pretty much the only platform minorities can use to get their message to the people who most need to hear it.

2017-09-26 12:17:00 AM
The real problem is people see celebrities as entitled, self-absorbed babies (athletes, actors, musicians, politicians, etc), often because we have such fragile psyche that well-rounded successful, and famous, people forces us to look inward as to why aren't we successful and famous.  Believing them to be whiny babies makes it easier to accept why we aren't successful and famous: we aren't self-absorbed babies like them.

Meaning, we are immediately skeptical when any of them try to stand up for a belief -- we immediately suspect ulterior motives and project our own insecurities into their narrative.  For example, when someone says that a professional football player's opinion doesn't matter because they're worth millions, what they're really saying is "I can't accept that this vastly more successful person then me is right because if I am not the moral one, I am just a comparative loser."

/this theory holds up with my anecdotal coworkers

It's astounding.

NFL players kneeling before a game to highlight institutionalised racism is someow disrespectful to the military, but neo Nazi marches aren't... despite the fact that 120,000 American soldiers died in WWII, fighting... the Nazis.

Huh.
