It's funny, I never noticed how white whataburger in Tallahassee was while I was a student there, but thinking back on it I don't remember any black employees on the occasions that I ate there. It was a popular choice for late night eating once the bars closed down.

The Whataburger here had mostly black employees last time I visited there. Then again, it's Monroe,Louisiana.

On the other hand, maybe this woman was a lousy employee, and when she got fired, she decided to try extortion, but they didn't go for it.

I keep reading histories of the Reconstruction hoping to find one with a satisfying ending.

Turns out we are still in the middle of the history of Reconstruction, and there may not be a satisfactory end in sight.

I go down to Tallahassee about every other year or so and when I do I try to eat at Whataburger. Never really noticed anything unusual about their employees, race-wise. Maybe it depends on which one you eat at or the hours or it was just coincidence.

Very mixed crews here in North Texas. Varies with the shift. Food and service excellent as always. Same regardless of the shift. Half our visits are between midnight and 5AM.

Totally possible, I only ever ate at one of the locations and it was usually around 2 am iirc.

It's very rare I eat there, but I've never had a problem with food or service when I went there.  In fact I'd say the service has been well above average.  The food.. well, above average for fast food.

Could be.  My bet is that it's just basic statistics.  You've got 5 people working at any given time, you're looking at what, a 1 in 32 chance of being all white or all black?   I sucked at statistics so maybe not.

Some years ago HBO had a documentary about Cracker Barrel and their discrimination practices towards the blacks and them queers.

Yes, the various managers proudly put the "cracker" in Cracker Barrel.

That's the fun trick, though: You usually have no recourse for false reports of the sort this one would be. Court filings are immune, and you'll never get the EEOC to take action on even a blatantly fabricated complaint.

When a Denny's blatant racial discrimination hit the news in the early 1990s, someone I knew was really happy about their fall.  He had once worked and he clear that you could not exaggerate how bad they were.  He literally got the job because he was white -- they actually said it.    He worked for them because he was desperate.

/It should be noted that the company had to pay huge amounts of money to settle for what they did, there was a changing of the guard, diversity programs where put in place, and they went to one of the worst to one of the best.

The Whataburger near me is entirely Hispanic except for one old white lady wandering around handing out spicy ketchup.

The one McDonalds I ever go to is run by a cabal of black women, presumably from the housing projects two miles away. If the EEOC looked into them, I suspect they'd get in trouble. But it's the best run McDonalds in the region.

I don't know the staff of this Whataburger, but if the management was worried about having an only black staff and put out the order to hire a few white people to balance things out, it would be a catch 22.

There was a combo KFC/Taco Bell in south Dallas I was a regular at because it was a right turn in and out, run by a similar cabal of black women from the area. Then one day it was staffed by poorly trained hispanics (the area was all black, they had to be transported in) and the quality went to shiat. I don't stop there for a snack anymore.

I sent this story to my father. He is 81, and grew up in the Jim Crow south. He still carries a scar on the back of his head where a white kid threw a chunk of brick at him and his brother from the school bus that they were not allowed to ride to his segregated elementary school back in the 1940's. Took four stitches to close.

All he could type back was "Son, never forget that there will always be people like this, same as when I was growing up." I could almost see him shaking his head as he wrote it. Nothing ever truly changes.

Black people have absolutely nothing to protest about today.
All that is in the past.
There's no more discrimination.
Right.

If your PR department can't dash off a form letter about celebrating diversity in response to a reporter's question about racist divisional management, it looks pretty damning.

Among other things, the general manager, Johanna Risk, directed her to review applications and only interview applicants who had white-sounding names.
A white-sounding name?  I know of many blacks named white and what could be more white-sounding than white itself?  Hard to believe people still think like this in 2017.

I mean... Okay. Let's talk a little about surnames.

People with English and French :"name" surnames could be white or black. Johnson could be white or black. Cooper(not even strictly a 'name' surname) could be white or black. Williams could be white or black.
Motherfarking Strudel is white. So is Delman, Weber, Murphy, and O'-anything.
Kim, Wang, Chin, and Koyanagi are not white or black.

Setting the notion of surnames and sounding "race" aside, you have an in person interview to figure this stuff out if you can't otherwise.

So all their employees are named, what, Ole Olsen? Reginald Fabersham? Suzie Chapstick? Throatwarbler Mangrove? Sounds like they're also discriminating against Asians among others. No Nguyens Allowed.

With the current President's penchant for attempting to repeal and undo everything the previous (black) President did, I honestly wouldn't be surprised anymore if Trump, McConnell, and Graham all worked together to put forward a bill to "repeal and replace" the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Take heart, though, and just remember that there are a LOT more of us pale folks who are on your side this time around, and if someone starts throwing bricks these days, they're going to find themselves quite outnumbered and regretting their choices.

Must be. Of the dozens of Whataburger locations I have been to, I have never seen  an all white staff. The one I went this morning for taquitos was one of those double window set ups. The cashier at the first window was a young Latina and the guy giving out the food at the second window was a nice portly African American.

First, it's unlikely that she confined any defamatory statements about Whataburger to the court filings. Second, why would the EEOC have grounds to take action in support of Whataburger against a defamer?
