Ex-Rep. Anthony Weiner has an estimated 7.5 percent risk of reoffending but is "very unlikely" to get into trouble again as long as he continues "sexual compulsivity" treatment, his psychotherapist said in a newly released letter to the judge who will sentence him Monday for sexting with a 15-year-old girl.

Or how a psychotherapist becomes a lawyer.

It's being held without bail.

To be fair, a man can't start drinking again if he never quits. Same reason Weiner cannot re-offend.

If he re-offends will that many people care this time?  Bulges in underwear aren't that traumatic, and he doesn't have an elected position to fight over.

Are we to believe that a soft science like psychotherapy can produce probable re-offense rates for individuals to 3 decimal points?  That's some great not-quite-science!

Still has a phone: check.
Still has a dick: check.
Still has a twitter account: check.
Still has the moral qualities of a sewer rat: check.

So why is he unlikely to reoffend? Is that code for "he'll think up new and more imaginative ways to be a fecking moron"?

7.5% is disturbingly specific.

Yeah, but now he's been told what a naughty, naughty boy he'd be if he does it again. Everyone knows that acts lose their erotic value when someone in authority prohibits you from doing them.

I suppose if you found about 1500 New York Jewish guys of about the same age, income and social caste, you could come up with something that specific.

Unless there has been some MAJOR strides forward in the 7 years I've been out of the field, this psychotherapist is full of shiat.

You just selected geographic, demographic, economic, and religion for your independent variables and no behavioral ones.  Doesn't that sound more like sociology than psychology or psychiatry to you?

Nah, the therapist says he's not a sexual predator for underage girls.   That's atypical behavior for his level of scum.   He's in his 50s and has no record of going after underage targets -- he only did so because he was enticed by one who initiated the illegal activity & didn't tell him she was underage right away.    He's still going to be an uncontrollable sexual freak that makes bad decisions about sending dick pics and picking up women and cheating on any woman that will have him...  he just won't be going after underage girls.    That's a reasonable assumption given his character.   He's a compulsive sex addict of some sort, but he's not Jared Fogle hanging out near school bus stops waiting to manipulate children into sex acts.

Dude crossed a line that was out of character even for him, and there's a difference between a sexual offender and a sexual predator.

The 7.5% estimate didn't come from Weiner's psychotherapist.

Kelly, Weiner's psychotherapist since January, said the 7.5 percent risk of a repeat offense found by a court-appointed evaluator represented an "average" risk of recidivism.
"This means that his assessments indicate that if left within the community there would be a 92.5% chance that Anthony would NOT have another legal sexual problem," Kelly wrote.

There certainly haven't been any major strides forward in legal or science reporting in the last seven years.

"The therapist said Weiner's treatment program includes weekly individual and group therapy sessions, four to five "12 Step" meetings a week, weekend intensive sessions periodically and daily check-ins, as well as tight restrictions on access to pornography and social media."

I'm sure Weiner will continue that therapy for the rest of his life.
