*rolls eyes*

A foreign power has hacked into our election system and was successful in breaching voting machines in "some" states.

how the hell is that not important?

Most States did not even know they had been targeted.

I'm going to bet most of them have claimed they were not targeted....because they had no way to know and therefore assumed all was well.  Equifax-style security.

The problem is your attitude about Trump. You look at the glass half empty all the time. So most of us just rolled our eyes at you negative people.

I know. Lots looked at that glass and saw it half empty, when in reality it was half full of piss and taco bell+tequila diarrhea squirts.

the indifference about this is depressing. It's taken almost a year to admit to this much and they are still keeping a lot hidden-maybe so the Russians don't know how well they succeeded. They knew about the attempts before the election. What they didn't know then was why the voter records were scanned. Probably was handy to combine voter data with the Facebook data so you'd know where to target your misinformation campaign.

The only consolation is that voter registration != vote tallying or voting machines.  It may mean that more people had trouble voting or got challenged more.

I'm skeptical about this. How is portscanning and penetration attempts on public IPs anything special? Blackhats have been doing that for decades on every public IP they can find, many originate from Russia and China.

Problem is, I wouldn't trust state officials to accurately assess whether or not their own underpants are soiled, much less be able to detect a sophisticated attack, or for that matter having the moral forthrightness to admit it if they had.  Add a x100 to that for states with GOP apparatus controlled voting.

There should exist no mechanism where hacking a voting machine is remotely possible.  They don't put those things on the damn internet, right?  I'm just a humble backwoods IT guy and even I know better than to do that.

Agreed but this was DHS that told them they were attacked. They notified all 21 states that they were targeted and presumably told the ones that were breached were breached. The states had no idea before today (unless their own people caught it beforehand)

The older, more old school party elders will admit to it, even those who aren't old old, but are still somewhat senior. They're starting to have their doubts. Hatch, Grassley, Burr, McCain, Graham. They're starting to murmur that this is bad.

Not at all. I have no confidence of anything, but I'm wondering how DHS pulled a particularly Russian government blackhat signal out of the usual noise on the DMZ? If you've ever watched the traffic on a DMZ interface, there are nearly constant port scans from IP addresses all over the world, and randomized bruteforce attacks on your public IP, that's actually just a normal thing, and has been for decades.

I guess I would like to read a more technical report on this because all the journalism I've read so far is pretty light on details.
