The Church of the Latter Day Saints, as it is formally known, determined that a reference to "hot drinks" in religious texts only applied to tea and coffee

They angry up the blood.

It's funny how they keep reinterpreting God's laws.  One day it's black people are suddenly human, the next it's Coca Cola for everyone!

I didn't know the Mormon Church reversed that. I need to tell my cousin so he can stop serving that shiatty La Croix water (which is somehow more bland than regular water) at Thanksgiving.

First, most Mormons drink soda, and many drink caffeinated soda, so it isn't like they were avoiding the stimulant, in general. Second, and importantly, it appears the Mormon church is continuing to mainstream more. Interesting.

Its like that adage:  You bring at least two mormon friends with you on a fishing trip because if you only brought one he'd drink all your beer.

Back in high school, I had this one Mormon friend whose parents didn't realize that Barq's root beer (regular only, not diet) has caffeine. She'd pick it out at the store and they never checked the label. A silly thing, but it was a safe way for her to rebel a tiny bit.

I think it will be interesting to see how Mormon missionaries work after the acceptance of caffeine as a central tenet of their religion.

At one point in time I tried to cut caffeine out of my diet, and for about a year it worked. But then I saw how other people around me were really enjoying themselves on the chemical and I began to think about how much I might have been missing out leaving this out of my life. So I tried a little. First a little bit of tea. Then some Fresca. Then some Coke and coffee. I moved on to Jolt.

Now I'm on a Four Loko, Vodka, and Red Bull mixed cocktail 5 times a day.

Sometimes I wish I could go back to the days where I was getting by without caffeine, but really, there isn't any comparison between how much I accomplish today and how little I was doing without these chemicals.

It's been at least 2 years since they decided this, I think, and it was an open discussion for quite awhile before that. When Smith came up with the Words of Wisdom, the only caffeinated beverages were coffee and tea, and they were really pretty much the only beverages served hot, so it was easy to just say "hot" beverages.

In their defense, caffeine isn't really good for you, and that's where this all comes from, treating the body they believe God gave them like a temple. People talk a lot of shiat, but I can't fault them for it. On the other hand, you should see how hard it is to schedule something like a banquet and find someone who wants to give your guests something other than lemonade or water. Iced tea isn't the default beverage here it is in most places, you have to go out of your way to make sure they think of it.

But it's not "arbitrary". They're supposed to treat their bodies well, as I just mentioned. They believe in God, they believe God made their bodies, and they believe that they should respect all of that by taking care of those bodies. This is just a rule that didn't age well.

Yay. Chuck Akana of the BYU "Admissions and Standards Office" kicked me out of BYU Hawaii in 1997 for being gay.

I helped at a local food bank that always had a couple of Mormon missionaries working.

They had been recently allowed to use Facebook (for outreach), but only a small amount of time each month (along with calling family).

/ I thought it was weird, but not surprising, that aside from having to pay for their mission trip they also had to pay the "church" rent for their apartment.

Have you ever eaten "funeral potatoes"?   That dish a heart stopper.   A delicious heart stopper.

My Mormon friends (moderate Dems, I guess "liberal" to some) drink hot chocolate like fiends.   That's accepted.   Go figure.

Hehe, I started drinking coffee in junior high, I was 6' in 6th grade so there was no worry about stunting my growth and I am NOT a morning person so the only way I could make it to school at the ungodly hour they start was to have my morning cup. My dad is also not a morning person so he bought a machine that ground the beans and had fresh coffee ready for us right when we woke up, best invention ever.

You really never know. It may be, to conjure up an imaginary scenario, that while caffeine kills you three years earlier, it improves your life so much that an earlier death is a reasonable price to pay.

Everything is more complicated than anyone realizes.

Grinding the beans just before brewing the cup is the only path to Really Good Coffee.

And so they caffeinated, and there was much rejoicing.

"Your body may be a temple, but it's also a dance hall and bowling alley." --Dharma and Greg.

For a very long time, mainstream religions have been ignoring and/or suppressing the Dionysian side of spirituality. People probably need that, or at least want it quite a bit. If people can't get that in mainstream religion, they'll get it from music, drugs, extreme sports fandom, farking people they're not married to, or... a non-mainstream religion.

I had a couple of Mormon friends in high school who'd do the same thing. I guess it's since it's the only carbonated beverage which generally doesn't have caffeine.
Again, this is how some rebel. Wild stuff, eh?
