I once was a 05H Electronic Warfare Signals Intelligence Morse Interceptor in the US Army.  Morse interceptors went by a few different colloquialisms, including "Hogs" (for the H in 05H), and one of them was "ditty bopper":

But these are my favorites:

05H Also see "hogs"
Electronic Warfare, Signals Intelligence Intercept Operator, Morse Code. The Army's MOS code for those who transcribed Morse signals of national security interest. Many could ask for a beer in several languages, albeit usually the wrong one. Reclassified 98H in the 1990s.

Terminology for a Morse Code interceptor.

hogs
An affectionate term for those lovable 05Hs. "Never try to teach a hog to sing. It wastes your time, and annoys the hog."

I tried to think of something clever and it was all just....meh.  Plus I really like words, and Ambivalence is a cool word.  I can't count how many times people have said it suits me so I'll count it a teeny tiny victory in life.

I wouldn't call my Fark handle obscure, necessarily,  but I'm not sure I can explain it, either.

Because these may be my last words.

Three things.  One, I'm a simple man with complex tastes.  The reverse is probably the better way to go through life, but I am what I am.

Two, It was a riff off of:

s.mprd.se

And three, it's a veiled Johnny Mnemonic reference which a lot of my online pseudonyms were.  Re: The LoTeks and "I'm a very technical boy."

I was listening to Pixies when I decided my old, Bob Dylan themed handle needed updating.

That would take all the fun out of it.

...isn't it obvious?

However, just to date myself - I used to be FormlesOne on QuantumLink. I've used that handle, or one like it, ever since.

Mine literally means nothing; just a combination of two random words I put together back in my BBS days.

The real answer is Daphne was my fake name when clubbing.  Yes, after Scooby Doo

"Nom du Fark"?

Oui mais, non.

French is stupid. I refuse to have anything to do with it.

Originated in FFRP channels on IRC, originally applied to a bronze Pernese firelizard (Bondi with a draconic -th suffix.  Because Bondi Beach is where people go to get tanned and bronze).

Before there was Fark, there was handles.

2017-09-21 09:12:05 AM
I was new to the BBS scene in the late 80's / early 90's and sitting at a computer, trying to think up a cool handle / login name.  My brother already had one based off some old Latin, but I wanted to one-up him.  I had The Comedy Channel on in the background. The Comedy Channel is what it was called before it was called comedy central, almost swore it was comedy planet, but Wikipedia corrected me.  They had some special with a stand-up comic going on in the background and the comedian was talking about someone watching him write in his diary over the shoulder, so he started just writing nonsense to freak out the over-the-shoulder reader.  His monologue had a Yak in it.  I thought it was really funny, so I used "The Yak".

When Ren & Stimpy came along, they had a love-affair going with Yaks and Yak-isms.  I already had "The Yak" established on local BBSes, so it was no problem being known more for that.  Then the internet came along.  I didn't really have access to it before college (We had slow dial-up at our house, 2400 baud for a long time until they upgraded to 14.4).  When I went to go as "The Yak" on internet sites, specifically hotmail and other free e-mail services, it was already taken.  Since it was college and I honestly didn't think I would have the same e-mail address for over 20 years I went with the drunk yak.

After I left college and people kept using the "thedrunkyak" e-mail address, I figured I needed to keep it, but I had to upgrade it to something more mature.  So, "tdyak".

And now you know the rest of the story.

This name started on IRC long before Fark. I did a minor in trombone while doing my computer science degree.

I was 8 when I first made the name and I can't bring myself to change it.

When I come into an internet forum (this is my only "social media") I want to remember that I do not know the other person and what has happened to them in their life. While they may seem like a nutter (and some are) I need to try and see if without bias. What I "know" is only what I think I know.

I need to be an empty cup waiting to be filled.

Mine is the nickname of Harry Flashman, the main character of George MacDonald Fraser's hilariously brilliant "Flashman" series of historical novels. The eponymous main character is basically a victorian combination of George W. Bush and Bill Clinton: a high-born, totally craven lothario who basically farks and bumbles his way through every major event of the mid-to-late 19th century.
