In fairness, the US government has been supporting all these pro-democracy groups and helping them develop the means to use social media to promote political change (see Ukrainian revolution of 2014 and the anti-Putin protests in Russia during 2011-13). So one can see how from Putin's perspective, he's just beating America at its own game and would feel justified since we started it.

Both sides are bad for Russia and the US? Bot-like typing detected.

Wait a minute...you're telling me all those pro-Trump Twitter accounts of women who look like Estonian supermodels and all the ones who claim to be gay black Muslims for Trump aren't real?

i remember, i think it was back when russia first invaded ukraine, there was loads of it then, as you might expect. there were plenty of young women claiming to be in various parts of the west pumping out crazy numbers of tweets, and there were also a lot of russian 'christian women,' really pushing their christian identity, as well as what you might call other white powery type accounts, too, all again pumping out tweets non-stop. among the layers there was obviously organization, coordination and automation.

it seemed there were genuine people in the west buying into that, although clearly interest in that was of a different scale to the election.

you never know for sure, but it seemed you could see them trying more subtle targeting tactics then, as well. for instance, i remember particularly one instance where there was this random account, the name of which was in part a lower league uk soccer team, as well as the person's supposed name. the account was claiming to belong to a teen supporter in the uk of this lower league uk club, also interested in f1 motor racing, iirc - i think the owner of the club had a relationship with f1. anyway, it was all a bit odd, it didn't really quite add up, things didn't look right with the supposed background, and the tweets were focused just on pushing a hard pro-russian line on the conflict (even though they were trying to appear not too blatant and claiming independence, etc). but you thought it could have just been some kid who was a fan of rt or something setting up a targeted account. it wasn't really getting much traction, and then it went ballistic at, iirc, one of the vice journalists covering the conflict, started with heavy anti-semitism, threatening him that if 'we' ever got him (the vice guy) to russia they'd fark him up, etc. so, if i had to bet i would have said the account was being operated from russia, but i couldn't say for sure. even if it wasn't being run from russia, i would have thought the people running the accounts from russia would have seen it, and learned from it. but, yeah, a rabidly pro-russian account positioned to target a lower league uk (albeit one with heavy financial backing) soccer team

I noticed that Trump's Twitter had around 50 million followers at the time of his inauguration.

It's now around 38 million. Were all those bots? Did Twitter clean house?

/Obama's is over 90 million, btw
//That probably pisses Trump off

The Soviets spent decades trying to play upon (mostly imagined) sympathy among the US left during the Cold War...

Then they discovered right-wing authoritarian followers.

Is anyone arguing that people didn't communicate through social media?

The issue is absolute lies being portrayed as actual events.  See "Obama is a One Man Terrorist Sleeper Cell" and "Hillary Clinton Murders People".
