Oh, Billy.

Billy, Billy, Billy.

Of course they know.

They just don't care.

They watched The Joker as portrayed in The Dark Knight and thought, "THAT'S the guy we want to be the Predisent!"

The true success of a great confidence trick is when the mark defends the con against its detractors, because the con man told them earlier that they were already being conned and that he's "saved" them.

Trump supporters don't think they're being conned - they think that Trump has successfully defended them against the "cons" run by liberals and elitists, who have clearly kept them down and marginalized them. Trump's just giving them a voice, really, and that, as long as they support him, he'll continue to be their defender, their voice against those nasty brown people and those scary globalists and those hoity-toity intellectuals trying to tell them that they're bad people for rolling coal, littering, and and so on.

You can't reason someone out of a position that they weren't reasoned into in the first place, and Trump played on their emotions, not their reason, when he conned them.

It's said that you can't cheat/con an honest man. But what about and honestly stupid one?

Why does it always come back to Heath Ledger's Joker? Seriously? I was genuinely lost when the Tea Party, en masse, compared Obama to the Joker, and I'm still at a loss today.

If anything, Trump is like The Penguin as best and Roland Dagget at worst.

Actually, Ronald Dagget from The Dark Knight is pretty apt. He was a crooked business man who colluded with a guy with a silly accent, and was too dumb not to realize that it wasn't for his benefit.

Huh.

If that's your thing, ok. I certainly don't see them getting "skewered." I see them shouting and shouting and shouting the same threadbare talking points, and then for a change of pace, shouting them some more. I can't fathom where the entertainment value is in that. The final breaking point for me was Milo Assholeopoulis shouting and shouting and shouting. Ugh.

You're not wrong, Walter Bill, you're just an asshole. Your point was basically airtight but by veering into Fark politics tab-style derision you managed to lose anyone who you may have been trying to reach. You did ask, "You know you're being conned, right?" Are you actually asking a Trump supporter or just setting up another round of your asshattery?

This is why I always hated your show. We likely agree in nearly everything but Christ, you're a caustic jerk.

I gave up on Maher when his right wing nutjobs served only to make his show into an orgy of masturbation and shouting. There's only so much shrill Coulter repeating the same 5 words over and over again you can take.  As the great philosopher Phil Donahue said "Loud doesn't mean right, Bill."

I don't understand this. Yes coulter  is a kkkoont, but to be fair, not all right wingers are that vapid. Last week had the infinitely more enlightening Bret Stephens (a right wing fool, but one compelled to vote Hillary last election), and you don't see right wing guests of his caliber on other left wing talk shows.

My point is that Maher serves as a kind of embassy for the left. He's the only spot on TV where big right wingers spar with left wingers in which the show skews liberal.

I don't mind that he has them on the show, I mind that he doesn't hold their feet to fire when they say stupid shiat. Some of the worst are Jack Kingston and Stephen Moore.  Both are on pretty regularly and both spout the GOP "small" government, trickle down bullshiat and he NEVER CALLS THEM ON IT!!

Here's the thing about trump supporters.

They believe in their heart of hearts that Donald J. Trump personally delivered them, individually and as a nation, from the very jaws of death.  He defeated the living embodiment of Satan on Earth.  Hillary Rodham Clinton is, to them, Beelzebub's hand picked demon, bred for the single purpose of destroying both God and Country.

But Donald J. Trump stopped all that.   RINO John McCain (they really don't like people who get captured either) and Mitt Romney (non-Christian pagan, might as well have been a Papist), they couldn't save America from B. Hussein Obama, and these poor people suffered under the whip and yoke of "The One" far worse than the children of Abraham did under Pharaoh.

So, no, they don't realize they're being conned.  To them they're really not being conned at all.  Not as long as trump elevates them to feel equal to him.  Not as long as he coddles them, hates the same things they do, strokes their fragile egos and says the kind of things they wish they could say.  Taxes, wars, all just piddling details.  What's important is trump will make America the ideal 1950's America that they all pine for.  The America that never existed.

Hey Maher, you know you're an anti-vaxxer, right?

2017-09-20 06:09:41 PM
For them to accept that, they would have to understand and admit that the sources they believe are the only accurate ones are actually false, and that they were too stupid to see the truth.

Not many people are consciously or subconsciously willing to admit they are being conned and will find any and every excuse and explanation to justify their actions and beliefs because the alternative is to feel incredibly stupid in front of the people you hate.

2017-09-20 06:10:46 PM
They weren't conned. They wanted a racist asshole as president. And they got one.

They didn't vote for anything to do with the economy. That's the bullshiat talking point they use when someone asks them why they voted for him and they don't want to admit the racist asshole thing.

Now, they're still abundantly stupid. But not because they were "conned."

Bill, like others, is actually being nice here, accepting the Trump voters' supposed rationale for voting for Baby Donald.

2017-09-20 06:10:56 PM
They don't know, don't care, don't want to hear any factual reasononing, and don't have a need to read any further. All they have are platitudes from rich pundits, catchy phrases from their Congressinal leaders, slogans from special guests ... and that's good enough for them.

i can present the actual text from congressional bills, highlight the exact verbiage that impacts them directly, and the only question i get is if I voted for Tump.

When the political becomes personal, they'll care (IE, when some of the shiat that Trump/the GOP starts to affect them personally, like loss of the ACA).

/You'll change your mind about a LOT of things when they stop being political issues and start being personal issues

I mean, yeah... but maybe this message would work better coming from someone other than literally the least convincing man in the entire united states?

Or is he thinking that because he's a fellow racist they're more likely to listen to him?  Is that the angle here?
