no, this is actually a significant development, as it means Mueller is looking to see if Trump's actions as president were influenced by his financial or business dealings with Russia. This is actually a very huge development. Even got a newsflash on my phone's news app

newsflashes are for significant developments in ongoing stories and major breaking news (such as an earthquake or school shooting)

this is a significant development in an ongoing story. Namely that the chief investigator is looking into the actions of the president in relation to Russia. That's HUGE if you're looking to see if Russia is influencing the president.

I'm sorry if you don't understand the significance

Censuring a specific President, rather than the office itself, would not be a coup.  It really would be the best move Congress could make.  Take away his ability to order military action unilaterally.  Take away his ability to pardon.  Take away his oversight of the FBI/DOJ/etc.  Isolate him.  That would send a powerful message to the world that the USA is not a farking banana republic being led by a madman.

Take a look at Kennedy and actions during the Cuban missile crisis to make sure the military did not use nukes without presidential approval.
If Donnie ordered a nuke attack the receiving officer would ask for a second authentication and before Donnie gave it the hope is he would be rendered unconscious.

It'd be more a "constitutional question" than a coup if it happened like this:

Congress passes a law stripping POTUS of his unilateral nuke authority. POTUS vetos. Congress overrides. POTUS raises hell and takes it to the SCOTUS. Meanwhile, POTUS tries to launch a nuke and Joint Chiefs say "sorry, law says you've got to run it through these procedures." SCOTUS says "that's a political question" and refuses to answer the hard constitutional question.

Or (since we're dealing with a fun legal hypothetical) they let Thomas (who doesn't believe in judicial review) write the opinion. He says "Congress passed a law, and the job of SCOTUS is to interpret it; we have no authority to strike it down," and thus ushers in a crazy new era of Supreme Court jurisprudence.

And if we ever get a sane POTUS in office again, he or she would have to fight to get nuke authority back because he or she would have minutes to act in an emergency.

It is annoying, but to bring the thread back on topic, so let's take a look at this gem FTFA:

One of the requests is about a meeting Mr. Trump had in May with Russian officials in the Oval Office the day after James B. Comey, the F.B.I. director, was fired. That day, Mr. Trump met with the Russian foreign minister, Sergey V. Lavrov, and the Russian ambassador to the United States at the time, Sergey I. Kislyak, along with other Russian officials. The New York Times reported that in the meeting Mr. Trump had said that firing Mr. Comey relieved "great pressure" on him.

If Mueller can link Comey and Flynn's firing to measurable actions by Russian agents, he's on to something huge. Basically, it can prove that there is active collusion between Trump and Russia, and our local Nothingburger franchise may be bought out by the much tastier Treasonburger.

2017-09-20 04:02:43 PM
The Watergate investigation, and the allied apparatus around it took two or more years. Get ready for a fairly lengthy strip tease everyone. We're forgetting that this was a multi-tiered process. The actual investigation was part of the matter.

His VP had to resign because of a corruption scandal; and the foreign newspapers were reporting things that got picked up back home that couldn't be controlled in the way domestic issues can by bringing pressure to bear on national media.

All of this created a drip, drip, drip that wore away Nixon's credibility.

And then there's the matter of money. This series of events is different because there was money changing hands. That is something that is comparatively easy to track.

lindalouwho: I see the News Flash tag has been changed...

you know, if they offered they offered that tag when you submit, I bet you'd see a lot fewer newsflash tags. But that would be logical, so we can't have that

I swapped it out to [News] tag. And yes, CNN(and others) have totally distorted all of our perception of what "Breaking News" is. We have a lot of users who do subscribe to the Newsflash email list. They drop out if it gets too spammy, so we like to discourage its use unless it's something that is happening or just happened "live" for lack of a better word.

For reference, I would consider very few things in Politics to be breaking news or a Newsflash for us. Handing down an indictment, or a top WH official getting fired maybe. Procedural stuff or involved legal maneuvering doesn't deserve more than a [News] tag if there isn't something funnier to tag it with.

I didn't know that was the case, hmm.

I stopped all notifications quite a while back. I was getting to that point, then one day with 3 Newsflash notifications made me say enough already.
The My Recent tab works just fine for me.
