Sorry folks, the island's closed. The maelstrom out front should have told ya.

There is a 100 MW wind farm on the south side of the island.  Hopefully it survived.

Aging power grid that cannot really be "fixed" by raising taxes and or usage costs, due to the ongoing recession...this was expected, unfortunately.

Pretty soon Trump will inform us that Puerto Rico is actually part of America and Puerto Ricans are US citizens. He'll tell us that almost nobody knew that. Then he'll learn about the US Virgin Islands and repeat.

It'll be along the lines of this:
'Who cares? Rocket man called me a honky sumpin'! Light a candle & shut-up already!'

I'll bring a T.V. to San Juan.

They're like $70B in debt. After paying interest, they don't have much money to fix things like power grids and roads. Not too suave!

This morning Maria took out the weather stations and both radar systems on the Island.
I don't look forward to the pictures from over there.

The "WHOLE ISLAND" is the size of a county submitter.

Puerto Rico
9,104 km2 (3,515 sq mi)

San Diego County
11,720 km2 (4,526 sq mi)

So it's not all that surprising that a power outage would affect the entire thing, power grids are not exactly the most stable things in the world...

That's not neccesarily true. Cell towers should have on-site backup, there are pictures of people in St. Martin standing on rubble to get a signal from the next island...

Problem is so many people tried to use it, nobody could use it....

Seems reasonable.  Category 5 hurricane hits, you're gonna lose power.  Gonna be a mess to clean up.

I hope the casualties are low.

Fixed for accuracy :)

As of Sunday ~ 10% of Puerto Rico remained without power.. then Maria is happening and.. well, you read the headline.

Related: the latest aerial footage of Dominica. Communication with Dominica currently only possible by ham radio---all conventional links offline. Radio station was knocked offline and presumably destroyed Monday night.

way south, report in if safe and feasible from St. Croix. (Tropical storm force winds possible through 8pm in USVI and PR).

Maria's wind speed down to 115mph after the eye cleared PR (not 155mph), faster than expected.

Next full advisory---which may yield more information about to what extent Maria threatens the continental US---not till 5pm. Hourly updates have been cancelled---Maria knocked out PR's weather radar.
