Here's the thing about belonging to a Union. If a state is having trouble, it's up to all the states to make sure thing are okay.

Thank goodness we aren't a loose confederacy but a strong union. Help me DC Wan Kenobi!

This was the result of a governor who decided to treat the legislature like subordinates in a business he ran, setting up a staring contest for two years and refusing to blink, all to assuage his own ego.  In the end members of his own party had to reach across the aisle and get veto-proof margins in order to get a budget passed.  To reward them he's put aside money to get them voted out of office.

This is what happens when business leaders decide to run for governor because they think it might be a good gig and are shocked when actual governing is required of them.

My dental plan, through the state of IL, took money out of my check every month. My last claim (Feb 2016) is still unpaid because, the plan flunkies tell me, they're self-funded and were never paid the money that was taken out of my check. That seems like the kind of thing people would/should file a class action suit over.

Finally got my tax refund in mid-August after filing in March. "New security measures" my ass.

Anyway, now I'm in Ohio where things are smooth and sensible. What? Why are you snickering at me?

This is all true.

However...

Even though I am as Libby as they come, I believe that at least part of the problem can be traced back to the DNC's support for an incredibly incompetent, corrupt, and just plain clumsy "Blago-I got this thing and it's golden"-jevich. Reaction to that affable douche is how the current turdburger got into office.

"What is going to take this backlog down is the borrowing," said Abdon Pallasch, spokesman for Democratic state Comptroller Susana Mendoza.
A provision in the budget enacted by lawmakers over the vetoes of Governor Bruce Rauner authorized the sale of up to $6 billion of general obligation bonds to pay bills from vendors and service providers that are accruing late payment penalties of as much as 12 percent.

What I do know is that my brother can't get a job building houses because the illegals have brought the wages down to the bare minimum and they suck at following building standards. The inspectors don't care because they are getting paid off and can spend more time going to breakfast.

This has been modus operandi for Illinois politicians (mostly Democrats) for decades, across multiple levels of government.  And when they're not borrowing to pay for day-to-day operational expenses (rather than major infrastructure work or single-spend, big-ticket items) they're selling state assets for pennies on the dollar to foreign interests (Chicago Skyway, the parking meter fiasco).

If Kansas is the nightmare world of conservative fiscal policy run amok then Illinois is the liberal corollary.

As far as pensions are concerned,  that's money owed to people who worked for the state instead of working on the private sector.
People act like the folks who are due there pensions are leeches.  They took that job and worked their ass off for decades to earn that pension.  That was part of their compensation package.

orangehat: Fark It: Monual: This was the result of a governor who decided to treat the legislature like subordinates in a business he ran, setting up a staring contest for two years and refusing to blink, all to assuage his own ego.  In the end members of his own party had to reach across the aisle and get veto-proof margins in order to get a budget passed.  To reward them he's put aside money to get them voted out of office.

This is what happens when business leaders decide to run for governor because they think it might be a good gig and are shocked when actual governing is required of them.

The unpaid bill backlog was already at $6 billion before Rauner took office, when Illinois had veto-proof Dem supermajorities and Democratic governor, and a 67% tax increase that the state's taxpayers were told was going to unpaid bills and pensions.

As far as pensions are concerned,  that's money owed to people who worked for the state instead of working on the private sector.
People act like the folks who are due there pensions are leeches.  They took that job and worked their ass off for decades to earn that pension.  That was part of their compensation package.

That's a generalization.  State workers have gotten a sweetheart deal in exchange for supporting Madigan and his establishment, to the detriment of taxpayers for decades.  People can retire in their fifties (early fifties) and get Cadillac health insurance plans, paid for by taxpayers, and compounding 3% COLA every year.  The people who sit across from them at the bargaining table, who are supposed to have an adversarial relationship with the union and should be trying to get the best possible deal for the taxpayers, are dependent on these same unions for campaign contributions, vote-getting, and soft landing spots for relatives, friends, donors, relatives of donors, etc., in the form of patronage.

The state would still have a significant pension deficit even if the delusional optimistic actuarial pension fund returns were reality.  The state has been promising too much for too long and has been borrowing and deferring other costs (modernization, etc.) to mask the shortfall so that these politicians who ask "how high?" when the unions tell them to jump can keep getting re-elected and not have to pay the political costs for all of the promises they're making.

The state has to raise taxes even more, and the state also needs to amend the constitution to take out the fiscal suicide pact that is the pension obligation clause.

State workers aren't guaranteed anything if the state becomes insolvent once enough taxpayers leave.

ArmednHammered: GoodDoctorB: ArmednHammered: quiotu: ArmednHammered: RoyFokker'sGhost: ArmednHammered: LOL! You aren't even trying. Ask California about their unfunded debt. But that's okay, we'll just hit up the taxpayers for more. What do you mean we don't have any taxpayers, where did they go? They ran to Texas. Good luck funding that shiat Jerry.

Yeah, keep farking that 'Californians leaving for Texas' chicken....

I'll see your stupid and raise you with more recent stupid!

Stupid conservatives Californians leave state for Texas, because they're stupid conservatives and value low taxes over anything else. Do you have an article from a non-conservative hate-rag?

I don't know, do you have an article from a non liberal hate rag?
What I do know is that my brother can't get a job building houses because the illegals have brought the wages down to the bare minimum and they suck at following building standards. I wouldn't buy a house in California built in the last ten years because it is a piece of shiat, built by people who don't give a fark about quality. The contractors don't care and are happy to pay off the inspectors because they are making so much profit. The inspectors don't care because they are getting paid off and can spend more time going to breakfast.
CSB: When I bought my house, it needed an inspection because it had a new roof put on. The City inspector showed up an hour and a half late and wanted to know where the coffee was. I told him that the coffee was ready at 7:00 when he was supposed to arrive but since he didn't show up until 8:30 he was out of luck. He got pissy with me and I told him that everything was being recorded and I was going to give his boss a copy. All ...

Where the heck did you get burn an entire state from my comment? I was burning a corrupt city inspector that expected me to provide him with free coffee even though he showed up an hour and a half late and was being a dick about the fact that I had no fresh coffee for him.

Weird that you would bring it up in a discussion about the Illinois budget shortfall, when California's GDP was touted. Almost like you have an axe to grind or something. So weird.
