Close enough to qualify as an example of Betteridge's Law of Headlines

I wondered what was going on yesterday afternoon. That's what I get for skipping the local afternoon news broadcast.

The difference is you turn your windshield wipers on in a Texas sandstorm.  In a haboob you don't.

It is not a sandstorm or a haboob.  It should be called a Grit Blizzard or a Dust Bunny Stampede, as our forefathers of the Dust Bowl labeled them.

I prefer twoboob.

FYL: "I am insulted that local TV news crews are now calling this kind of storm a haboob. How do they think our soldiers feel coming back to Arizona and hearing some Middle Eastern term?"

Several of my old Army unit friends who served in the Gulf War picked up the term while stationed over there and now use it to describe the phenomena.  Why do these people hate our returning G.I.s?

We have Synchronicity!

I just said the term "Champagne Room" (well yelled it, its a long and dull story) and now I see this headline. What are the odds?

Pure coincidence, how does that work?
According to John Allen Paulos, you should not consider the odds of the coincidence, but rather the odds of any coincidence happening. Like one in a million chances (Pratchett), coincidences always happen.

If it is a one in a million chance on Discworld, it is a sure thing. The heroes always take one in a million chances. It is the one in five chances that kill you.

Our round world is just a feeble copy of Discworld. They even had to do away with the Law of Gravity (things fall DOWN) and use the law of gravitation (matter tends to form mounds, and if you have enough of it, balls).

If you can't see the difference between common sense concept of gravity (things fall down and go boom!) and physical scientific gravitation (Higgs Bosons give particles mass, so they all attract each other, even across the Universe) you should stay out of astronomy and the other hard sciences, including biology which is more semi-firm or gelatinous, like green cheese.

I always get haboobs confused with habibis.

/ Whoever wrote the Urban Dictionary definition for habibi was very clever and observant. He (or she) says that habibi, when used by a man of a man means "mah boy" rather than "my love".

Trust me. There is some overlap between the two concepts. I mean, my love and my boy, not haboobs and habibis.

In much of the Muslim world, ancient times never really ended. They got papered over with the Quiran rather than the Old and New Testaments, or rather, in addition to the Old and New Testaments, but there is still plenty of Hellenic, Roman and pre-Western civilization kicking around.

Like the naked youths in the background of Micheangelo's "Holy Family".

The Doni Tondo or Doni Madonna, sometimes called The Holy Family, is the only finished panel painting by the mature Michelangelo to survive.Wikipedia

I been there (in the Uffizi) and seen it with my own eyes, by Crum! Makes you feel kinda like a hick.

And now, Brantgoose out.

I have gone from a haboob joke to habibi to Urban Dictionary to the Uffizi and Michelangelo and mansplained at lest six world class civilizations (Pre-classical, Greek, Roman, Christian, Muslim, post-Christian), maybe more.

And all in one Fark thread.

Typical Brantgoose posting.

Eat your hear out Walt Whitman. You think you are large? You think you contain multitudes? You think you contract yourself? Ha!

My name is Legion.

Eat my dust, Whitman!

Ha! Ha!

It is perfectly honourable and even cromulent to be you!

I love it when I combine Preacher Brantgoose, Professor Brantgoose and Crazy Brantgoose in a fair and balanced way.

Are we having fun yet? You betcha! I know I am!

BillyYank: In Australia it's known as Down Undhaboob.

Good. Good. Good. Two voteys for you!

But aren't you ashamed of yourself, BillyYank? Inventing Australian culture with a name like BillyYank?

Meh.

As a Canadian I always think of our upside down Sister Dominion, Australia, as a sort of WannaBe America. Of course, Auzzies are free to think the same of Canada, especially Alberta or BC. I am not from there. I am from the other side of Canada, like a person from Perth is from the other side of Australia to Melbourne or Sydney, or vice versa, as the case may be.

It's a free world, BillyYank. If you want to invent Australia, invent Australia. And I will do the same.

Hey, I am large, I contain multitudes, and so does the USA.

"Sadly"? "Haboob" is some stupid trendy shiat, we called them dust storms in Arizona for decades as well, it's stupid, don't hop on that godamn "latest trend" bandwagon. Of course, I have no problem with the Middle East, I just hate people who latch onto trendy phrases and think they're cool.
