It shouldn't have been renamed after him in the first place, so ...

Mr. Lee holds the ignominy of being the only (in)famous person I know of in my family tree, besides Adam and Eve or course.

Not a direct descendant, but there he is in another branch. Ma's side of the family has been over here a long time.

The uptick in white supremacist violence is really souring monuments to white supremacy.

That might be what we need to do with these monuments.  Just rename them instead of tearing them down.

You can't erase history.  If you try to hide it, you're just a liberal idiot likely taking tons of Xanax, Clonopin  and getting triggered by 3 Stooges and Little Rascals re-runs.

That may be a bazaar (but I don't know what they are selling), but the only bizarre thing is that people think this is something new. They forget about the huge fight over the Confederate flag recently and prior arguments over its inclusion on state flags, etc.

Many people may have started caring more now, but it isn't a sudden thing.

The only people that were hiding history are those that created the myth that the Confederacy stood for anything more than treason and slavery. This is just pulling the true history back into the open.

Are those the ones that wear swastikas, shout Nazi slogans of death and beat people in a  torch-lit attack? Or are they the ones that murder people with their cars? I used to think that was jihadi terrorists but it's getting difficult to tell the difference from brown terrorists and white terrorists.

Not really. It is a logical continuation of removing things honouring the Confederacy and its leaders. They started with the easiest and most obvious, Confederate flags flown by state governments and are continuing to peel back the white washing of history.

It just so happens they got a boost when white supremacy got thrown in everyone's face a year ago. Now these groups have more support and power to push things through.

Let some cracker, who was feeling lucky, like Dylan Roof pollute your brand, and all hell breaks loose. Not that Dylan's uncle, Jim Crow didn't exploit history too. Nazis are feeling lucky, these days. They're going to run the brand into the ground.

I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, despite them being a church (bazinga?  am I doing it right?) and concede they might be doing it because they actually realize that being named after someone famous mainly for backing a racist cause isn't something they want.  But you keep your narrative if you want, even if the Reverend in charge said it was because they didn't want to be associated with white supremacists at Charlottesville.

> Leaders of R.E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church voted Monday to return to the parish's original name of Grace Episcopal Church.

Episcopalians are fairly liberal for a group that used to consist of the rich WASP establishment. Their conservative members who hate women, gays, and civil rights have seceded to various new Anglican sects.

Q. Why did Lee move to Lexington, Virginia?
A. Because the US turned his family's slave plantation into Arlington Cemetery and were digging graves right next to the house.

Lexington is also home to Washington and Lee University. How long will it keep its name?

Many of those sects headed by very black, very African Nigerian Anglican bishops (at one time at least).  Imagine how far a WASP will go to be free of liberals.

History is not reality?  Right.

The whitewashing of history glorifying Lee and other leaders of the Confederacy is not history (well the fact that it was done is history, but not the results).

Lee was not a hero. The Confederacy did not fight for freedom. Lee was a traitor that killed many thousands of Americans in order to protect the institution of slavery.

Let's be fair, some are also from the immediate post-reconstruction period when they were put up to tell the black people that they might not be slaves, but their masters were still in charge.
