This has been whispered for a while now. If it's actually gaining traction, I guess I'd better check the price of a red robe and a few bonnets.

The GOP floor humpers love The Constitution so much that they want to scrap it and start from scratch. Makes sense to me.

are pushing for a constitutional convention to limit the size of the government.

Sure they are...
I can only imagine the trillions of dollars of corporate giveaways that would be enshrined in our New & Improved Ronald Reagan Memorial® Constitution

new amendments mandating a balanced budget

LOL. That will go right out the window the second one of them wants to start a new war.

They have to destroy it in order to save it.

Of course they wouldn't invite democrats, because bipartisan discussion and governing are for traitors and cowards, whose punishment shall be an unending torture of the GOP flapping its oversized elephant ears so hard and fast that it freezes all legislation proposed that does not come from within

I need to know if I should invest in nylon or hemp futures (assuming rope will be used for drawing and quartering betrayers) or invest in petroleum for the boiling in oil that will occur to the disloyal.

How many Farkers here can name their state representatives? Best get to fixing that and then doing something about it, because between this shiat and drawing congressional districts, this is how business interests are most effectively subverting democracy in this country.

I'm sure with their sterling record of compromise and negotiation, this will work out just great for them.

LOL. That will go right out the window the second one of them wants to start a new war.

No, they'll just cut spending on poors, then talk about how poors here have it so much better than do the poors in whatever country we're invading.

2017-09-18 07:49:07 PM
So they're calling this meeting so they can finally sit down and read it for the first time?  They might be surprised to find out what they've been doing wrong this whole time.

Oh, and this:

A slew of conservative activists, such as mega-donors Charles and David Koch and the American Legislative Exchange Council are pushing for a constitutional convention to limit the size of the government.

By "limit the size of government" they mean "get rid of those pesky rules that keep people from getting hurt/dying so we can make more money."

2017-09-18 07:49:13 PM
Yeah I'm sure this won't be to enshrine some kind of nazi bullshiat into our constitution.

2017-09-18 07:49:21 PM
So this is how democracy dies: not with a roar, but a whimper...after being farked to death by a gang of domestic oligarchs and their rented quislings.

/Kinda sad about that.

2017-09-18 07:49:26 PM
A group of GOP state legislators spent four days last week in Phoenix outlining how to run a constitutional convention that would pave the way for new amendments mandating a balanced budget and possibly congressional term limits, and definitely outlawing abortion, making English the official language, Christianity the official religion, eliminating LGBTQ rights, making flag worship mandatory, funding the military and nothing else, mandating "Fark you, I've got mine!", and myriad other truly anti-American things.

Fixed for truth.

Gyrfalcon: I'm sure with their sterling record of compromise and negotiation, this will work out just great for them.

I hope you are not implying that right wing scheme will backfire on them. That never happens to the GOP.

2017-09-18 07:50:49 PM
Calling a Constitutional Convention in our current political clustefark would be the fast track to us, as Americans, have our own Brexit or Catalonia-breakoff moments for real.

You really think urbanized, nu-industrialized states want to be permanently lashed to laws written by country yokels any more than they are now? Just a balanced budget amendment/clause alone would be enough to permanently cripple the ability of a national government to act in a swift way to disasters and chronic issues that would be resolved, in part, by money.

People are looking for instituional solutions to bad human behaviour and such a thing doesn't exist a lot of the time, you either have to not put bad people in charge, or recognize when they are actually doing bad and replace them - while giving the replacement enough actual time to fix shiat.

Our pattern of letting Republicans break everything, and only giving Democrats a couple of years to fix it before we get frustrated and let Republicans break it again is why we have been stuck in the 1980s (at best) with regards to a lot of issues.

But of course, this current batch of Republican activists and office-holders think that even that is too good, and think we should revert to the 1880s, and a few think the 1780s were just fine (aka the days of the Articles of Confederation)

I just wish the backfiring was "Them losing office" instead of "Ruining the capacity of the [given] government to operate effectively".

I admit, I had to look up who my local state rep is, but that's because of how many there are in my immediate area. I know one near me, but that's because I graduated high school with his daughter and he graduated high school with my mom. And I know who he replaced because a family friend worked for him.

2017-09-18 07:53:34 PM
If it stopped with only "A group of GOP state legislators spent four days last week in Phoenix outlining how to run a constitutional convention that would pave the way for new amendments mandating a balanced budget and possibly congressional term limits," I wouldn't see a problem.

Unfortunately, we know that the GoP has no intentions whatsoever of stopping there.

And someone gets that, "they want to have a constitutional convention to rewrite our Constitution to make it friendlier to business, to inject religious and ideological elements."

Those farksticks want a theocracy and we can not allow that.

They're republicans. Everything they do is sinister. They're evil, it's what they do.

2017-09-18 07:58:43 PM
Now this is what I want. A dying party which has to resort to gerrymandering, voter suppression/fraud and Russian interference just to stay in power, now wants to tamper with the Constitution.

2017-09-18 07:59:23 PM
I couldn't read the article because an ad blocked my phone indefinitely. Which is how I assume it will be for the uninvited who try to get into that convention.

2017-09-18 07:59:25 PM
So if the republicans did this, any democrat or none right winger in this nation would effectively have had their nation stolen from them. The republicans would never consult with the democrats when it came to rewriting the constitution and would turn the former US into a Ann Rand fantasy world.

You would think more republican lawmakers would remember a sunny day at a nice baseball field near the capital a bit more clearly. It wasn't that long ago. Obviously the lesson has yet to sink in...

2017-09-18 07:59:58 PM
They seem awful confident about how 2018 is going to go, given there's been a consistent double digit swing towards democrats in almost every special election since november.

Either they're drinking their own Kool Aid, or they know something we don't about how 2018 is going to go down.

2017-09-18 07:59:59 PM
I don't want a New Constitution, and certainly not one made by these assholes.  I'll die to defend our Constitution if that's what it takes.  Things are bad enough for the American everyman as it is--these assholes are not concerned with providing us with any relief, but rather they wish to eliminate our fundamental freedoms.

Along with putting women in chains forever (every abortion illegal no exceptions), eliminating Freedom of Speech (except for the rich), and making Evangelical Christianity the REQUIRED religion for public / military service. Oh, and homosexuality explicitly made illegal.

I can name them. I can also name my Republican Governor (Larry Hogan) who was elected because liberals were too lazy to run an effective candidate against him, and too apathetic to go to the polls.

There has been too much violence. Too much pain. But I have an honorable compromise. Just walk away. Give me your Congress, the Senate, the Courts, and the whole Government, and I'll spare your lives. Just walk away and we'll give you a safe passageway in the wastelands. Just walk away and there will be an end to the horror.

If you busy yourself too much with blaming liberals or Democrats for your representative, you risk losing sight of the people who voted for said representative.

Republicans aren't planing on ever having free and fair elections again, largely because they haven't since Diebold invented the Totally Insecure Polling Machine. The Republicans understand now that if they don't get in early to prevent accountability, that they might end up being held accountable for their actions in the near future.  Mueller has them absolutely farking terrified.

Speaking of the Kochs, they ran an advertisement on Hulu during last week's season premiere of South Park. They also ran an ad on SP last year right before the election.  Those are the only two times I've seen Koch TV ads, so it's odd that they were both on South  Park. Trey and Matt being self-described 'libertarians' does not explain it.

This is why we're farked.  Perhaps we deserve this: white men committing continent-wide genocide to found a country, turning slavery into a business plan (to this day), with the vast majority of the population now being 'Dancing With The Stars' mouth-breathing telephone sanitizers either too stupid to realize the danger or too apathetic to care. I mean, the Romans ain't around anymore either, are they?

This bonkers plan would turn the US into Venezuela, except with wealth redistribution to the rich instead of the poor.

Don't blame the voters for Hogan.  Brown Coakley'd that shiat.

2017-09-18 08:09:50 PM
the first thing they will try to do is make it so the state legislatures choose the senators for each states instead of the voters. this will make Gerrymandering super powerful. the senate will be as lopsided as the house it now.

fusillade762: new amendments mandating a balanced budget

LOL. That will go right out the window the second one of them wants to start a new war.

True, but the supply of willing and able troops (toy soldiers to the GOP) isn't infinite and the predisent is working hard to kick out thousands of trained and ready warriors. Once  they buy the country they will have to reinstate the draft. Then add the working poor who will never get ahead or catch a break and owe their souls to the company store. There are dark times ahead.

With Trump's election, I feel the USA is officially in decline. I almost selfishly hope it doesn't completely crater in my lifetime. I hope even more that the Dems and the left in general grow balls of steel and wrest our country back from them. Every day that dimwit is not impeached, I lose hope.
