I've never understood the "Yankees vs Red Sox" rivalry. One is the most successful team in baseball, the other hasn't seen a championship in elentybillion years or so. Why don't the Sox develop a rivalry with the Cubs or the DevilRays. At least a team they can compete with? It would be like Montreal Canadians saying that their big rival was the Phoenix Coyotes. Its not just proximity, even the Lakers don't consider the Clippers their rivals and they play in the same building.

Why do Red Sox fans do that to themselves?

Freddy is all the mascot I need.

skinink- $6.50 for a Sam Adams sounds about right... for any bar in Manhattan!! Don't even want to know how much one would go for in Stankee Stadium- assuming they sell something other than Bud.

all y'all haters: I don't understand why Sox Fans partaking in one of the oldest traditions in sports ("this year's the year, guys) seems to get under everybodies' skin. I mean, you joined a thread discussing an article about Wally the Green Monster, and are shocked, I say, shocked to find out there are Sox Fans in it.

I say, give us credit. The Sox haven't won the series since long before I was born, and I still get pumped at the beginning of every season. I remember before the Torre era, when you couldn't pay a NY'er to wear a Yank's Hat.

Anyway, Evil Empererors, see you in the ALCS, 'cause remember, this year's the year!

We have the best pitching in baseball.

Best pitching staff? oakland came in and hit .328 for the series? 39 hits in 3 games! the only reason the sox won it was because of 3 unearned runs in game 2. oh and what kind of "great" pitching staff has a backup infielder warming up in the bullpen late in the game?

Every team in baseball has problems with their fifth starter, and Boston is no exception. Not sure Arroyo will last long with another performance like last night.

IMO Best headline since "Kobe rapes _____"

The kind that would rather save a reliever for a game without a 13 run deficit.

Once Nomar gets back and Pokey moves to second...

What I don't understand is why the Red Sox are the new bandwagon team. Since when have Americans supported a perennial loser?

Red Sox fans - why do you hate America?

I hope Kerry has a better September/October than the Sox are going to have. If he is smart he'll turn down the invitations to throw out the first pitch at a Sox playoff game.

That's what I love about being a Red Sox fan...we live for today (half game up on May 28)....not in the future(October).

/You know the difference between a Fenway Frank and a Yankee Hot Dog? You can still get a Yankee Hot Dog in October (worst anti Red Sox joke....ever)

When asked, presumptive Democratic nominee John F. Kerry said "I always root for the Red Sox, except when I root for the Yankees."

kyouzo, frannie88 is right, other than the infield dimensions, everything else, foul territory, distance to the outfield wall, height of the wall is up to the stadium designers.

The green monster is there because of the street right behind it.

Another example: the bullpen at Jack Murphy stadium in San Diego (AKA Faceless Conglomerate Field) is located in the right field corner, and considered fail territory. So if a ball rolls into the bullpen, the fielder must still retrieve it and throw out the batter.

It's probably good for a few runs a year when inexperienced right fielders don't get the memo about ground rules.

Lebowski78 - right on. If you remember rooting for Dan Pasqua, Ron Hassey, Kevin Maas, Mike Pagliarulo, Ed Whitson, Dale Berra, Andy Hawkins and Claudell Washington, there's your pre-Torre cred.

Freddy is one crazy ol' dude. I was in the same subway car as he was recently on my way to section 41 of the RF bleachers. Go Freddy.

'this year's the year'. newsflash to Sox fans: your year was LAST year. and you STILL lost.

Man, you missed a few classics. Like when Jack Clark was the deadline trade...and Matt Nokes was the catcher. Also, the terrible threesome of Wade Taylor, Jeff Johson, and Scott Kaminiecki. Those were the bad ol' days.

Pagliarulo and Kaminiecki were solid players.

USELESS INFORMATION WARNING:
The Red Sox may choke annually, but their fans aren't frontrunners like Yankee fans, as evidenced by Baseball Almanac:

Frontrunner Stat #1:
Post Bucky Dent era (1979-2003):
Red Sox average game attendance = 27,303 (80.6% stadium capacity)
Yankee average game attendance = 31,940 (55.5% stadium capacity)

Frontrunner Stat #2
During this period, Red Sox season attendance has outdrawn Yankees eight times, despite having 41% fewer seats to sell for home games.

Frontrunner Stat #3
During Mattingly's last couple of seasons, the Yankees drew BELOW league average attendance, despite having the stadium with the largest seating capacity in the AL.

Frontrunner Stat #4
More proof of front runner status: During same period, but broken down to pre-Torre/post-Torre:
Pre-Torre: average season attendance = 21,316
Post-Torre: average season attendance = 30,621 (44% increase)

Yankee Fans Suck Bonus Stat
And just to rub salt into the wound in for S&G, during the infamous Yankee drought of 65-77, in which seasons did the Yankees have their highest season attendance?

ANS: The two years they played home games at Shea.

CONCLUSION
Still, Fenway sucks.

Boston fans do indeed have a greater capacity for tolerating losers than do New Yorkers, I'll give you that.

But I wouldn't be proud of it.

2004-05-28 02:31:27 PM
The Yankees are technically a great baseball team ---

BUT THEY STILL SUCK! It's not about their skill it's about their very presence in baseball.

YANKEES SUCK!

To be fair, what other choice do they have?

2004-05-28 02:34:23 PM
Until they win a world series, there should be very little talking coming from Boston fans...

Shut your collective pie holes!

Thank you!

2004-05-28 02:39:26 PM
And Jim Leyritz...

2004-05-28 02:39:29 PM
On the subject of the pre-Torre years, how can we forget Mel Hall (no matter how hard we try)? It was so bad, I think Alvaro Espinosa might have been the only representative to the All-Star Game one year.

2004-05-28 02:41:21 PM
Red Sox fans' battle cries, by year:

1919-2002: "We'll get you next year!"
2003: "Cowboy Up!"
2004: "Wait until Trot and Nomar come back!"

The results are always the same; just a different set of suckers rooting against fate.

By the by, how long is Trot going to be out for what Sox fans vehemently referred to as "merely a herniated disk"? Ask Don Mattingly how back injuries affect your performance.
