Yeah, pretty sure the Right will give up College Football and NASCAR if Trump tells them ESPN is a bunch of meanies.

It's not like conservatives are going to give up their love of sports. They aren't going to give up anything. They just want to protest a bunch and get their way. Call the bluff.

ESPN numbers are down because of high subscription costs as has been highlighted in numerous greenlit FARK articles.

But fark everybody who wants to take sports and turn it into political theater. That's getting to be quite a list.

Conservatives are "fans" of black athletes the same way Romans were "fans" of gladiators getting their entrails ripped out by tigers. They are objects for their amusement, not human beings.

pro sports has been non-stop jingoism since 9/11, was that a problem for you too? how about the billions of dollars of public money funneled to team owners? how about the crimes sprees covered up by colleges in the name of protecting athletes?

this horse is long since out of the barn and people who whine about "but I don't WANT politics in my sports" almost always mean "but I don't WANT politics I disagree with in my sports"

First of all, Donald Trump is a white supremacist. Second, Trump supporters are deplorable. Third, ESPN sucks. It was really good back in the day though. Early 90s, I used to get up early to watch Sportscenter before 6th grade. By the mid 2000s, I realized that outside of a small amount of sports footage it was just the same 20 minutes worth of tabloid shiat spread over 24 hours. Around the Horn: hear 5 guys yell about 5 things, then PTI starts and you hear these two morons yell about those same 5 things, then a one hour Sportscenter where they discuss those 5 things quietly until they go to Stephen A Smith and he starts yelling about the things.

What do you think about the post-9/11 change to NFL games that brought players from the locker room to the field for the national anthem? Or the statement read before the anthem that goes something like "To honor America and the men and women who serve, please stand for the national anthem" that deliberately ties your standing to wars fought for political purposes?

Obama gave a long, contrite, speech disassociating himself with the particular views of that church.  Donald Trump and his followers are never contrite about anything. They can't promise to do better in the future they only deny that they ever did wrong, past present or future. Instead of "sorry I peed on your leg," you get, "I didn't do that I would never do that that's your own pee. You notice the pee so that makes you the real pee-er around here"

There has to be some reason I know Jeremiah Wright's name despite never attending his church. I also know a guy named Ward Churchill's name despite never attending school in Boulder. Who was he? Oh right, the guy conservatives demanded be fired for saying the same things that future Senator Roy Moore is saying. But keep shrieking, liberals! Conservatives will continue to be the strong silent type like Gary Cooper!

Serious question. I don't follow sports, but I get that they are very important to a lot of people. What I don't understand, though, is how a football game has anything whatsoever to do with patriotism, or respect for the troops, etc.? Yes, they either play the national anthem (or have some local aspiring singer murder it), but it isn't about the anthem, either. If the same people were in a Walmart or just walking down the street and the anthem started playing, they'd either ignore it or possibly stand around looking confused. And as for Kapernack, he's not being rude. He isn't pissing on a flag, or trying to yell over the anthem, or mooning the crowd. He's literally kneeling in silence for Chrissake.

I honestly don't understand it. And the rabid, spittle-flecked yammering about it from the right is starting to get a little scary, frankly.

Sports is not a concert or movie. We literally have 24/7 coverage of a person's life. By saying this, you deem a person is not allowed to exercise their first amendment rights until employment ends.

Not true. The modern criminal justice system was based around the conservative hatred of rape (of white women by black reefer addicted men like Emmitt Till)
They also hate the rape of white women by Mexicans aka DACA

How would sports coverage survive without stupid, ignorant blather? It would kill the post-game interview. It would kill bad-mouthing. It would kill the professional sports industries and all the billionaires and millionaires would have to go back to working and conning for a living instead of gouging billions out of cities, public services and wealth, and the taxpaying entrepreneurs who are displaced by giant mega-buck stadiums, their parking lots, their concessions and all the freebies including but not limited to stadiums, hotels, malls, restaurant complexes, etc.  The businesses displaced by this con game are even sadder than the loss of infratstructure, public welfare (in the good sense) and services. Mega-dollars are instatiable sources of political, economic, social and moral corruption. Belial and Mammon and Baalzebub combine forces to traduce and destroy humanity through jock-sniffing idolatry.

Yes, intelligent informed opinion is out of place in sports. It enflames the bums almost as much as hard bleachers for the poor and middle classes, boozy whorehouses in the sky for the owners and their rich buds.

The connection between conservatism, religion, organized crime and organized sports was already well-established when Thorstein Veblen wrote The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899).

Speaking of which, I saw an article on the subject of "Veblen Good" while I was Googling the spelling and date of Veblen's name and book respectively. Cool. He has a major economic phenomenon named after him.

A Veblen Good is one where demand anomalously rises with price instead of falling as you would expect from normal economic theory. You know, like the price of flash basketball shoes and sports event tickets. It is like snob appeal, which is another anomaly of economics, but less so because it is pure psychology and sociology, rather than rational or economic behaviour.

Veblen influence writers such as Sinclair Lewis and economist-humourists such as Stephen Leacock.

The Dismal Science is never far from satire, parody and humour, hence the fact that Lewis Carroll has more citations than almost any writer, let alone economist in economics papers and books.

I'm traveling this weekend,  and your post made me realize that the only time I watch Sports Center is in hotel rooms. Hotel cable is iffy, but they always have ESPN, and it gives some background noise in the morning while I'm getting ready.
