Alright, I was going to say something snarky about them voting for her out of pity, but now I'm genuinely curious. How is the sun deadly to her when she clearly has the ability to produce melanin? Do her cells lack a less visible form of UV protection that even albinos normally possess?

"Riley was born with a rare genetic disorder called xeroderma pigmentosum (XP). Any exposure of her skin to the ultraviolet rays of the sun - even a sliver of light through an open door or a cracked window - could result in a blistering burn, potential malignant cancer, internal organ damage and, eventually, death."

If only there was a way to research her condition.

Xeroderma pigmentosum, which is commonly known as XP, is an inherited condition characterized by an extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight. This condition mostly affects the eyes and areas of skin exposed to the sun. Some affected individuals also have problems involving the nervous system.

Xeroderma pigmentosum is caused by mutations in genes that are involved in repairing damaged DNA. DNA can be damaged by UV rays from the sun and by toxic chemicals such as those found in cigarette smoke. Normal cells are usually able to fix DNA damagebefore it causes problems. However, in people with xeroderma pigmentosum, DNA damage is not repaired normally. As more abnormalities form in DNA, cells malfunction and eventually become cancerous or die.

Not exactly. The disease is caused by an inability to repair DNA breaks due to ultraviolet light. Nothing to do with melanin. The XP family of proteins are unable to repair the broken DNA, which can lead to cancer, blisters, degenerating skin, etc.

She has type D, which means she's affected by a slow neurodegeneration. Very sad. :(

There is! It's called "pose the question in a thread and watch Farkers trip over each other to post the answer".

I understand how that would lead to skin problems, but internal organ damage? Isn't preventing UV light from reaching the internal organs one of the main functions of skin in the first place?

"Her DNA does not contain the antibody to repair the damage caused by cyclobutane dimers and 6-4 photoproducts that invade skin inside UV rays".

That's bad enough, but she also "has the "D" strain of the disease, meaning she also has neurological degeneration. Her DNA does not have the antibody to repair oxidation in her brain. In other words, her brain cells are dying, and she is losing cognitive abilities as if she were rapidly aging. Her parents estimate that she has lost 20 points off her I.Q. since her freshman year of high school."

In this photo you see the girl who won, a female adult chaperone, and another homecoming queen candidate.  I assume.

The story itself was really cool.  As far as I could read it before the "full page, take over everything" ad appeared and obscured the whole thing.

That is a crap design that is getting used WAY too frequently anymore.  Fark you, page designer.  Fark you.

That's happened a lot in the last few years.  It used to be that the homecoming queen had to be the hottest, most popular girl in the school.  That seems to have changed.
